Michelle Rodriguez Discussion Post #4

In keeping with the article the Identity Terms I would use to identify myself would be Latina/Hispanic, though those are the terms I use when filling out official paperwork. Usually when I am asked my response is Puerto Rican and Italian, because my father is Puerto Rican and my mother is Italian. I am also American because I was born here.

I am cisgender and use the pronouns she/her and if I had to “classify” my sexuality I would say you love who you love would just about sum it up for me. Though unless I’m looking to date you, this information isn’t something I find to be of importance to anyone.

The theory I chose in Critical work on language and the philosophy of language was “Sex Marking.” In short, I believe this section was explaining that there is too emphasis is placed on gender when there doesn’t need to be, and especially when it doesn’t make a difference to know to begin with. And doing so just reinforces the “male dominance” we are trying to get away from. I found the attached chart and demonstrates how we can refer to the same thing without having to “gender” it, therefore including everyone.

The second column is the same as the first column–removing “man” therefore encompasses all people and removes any assumptions that the person holding the position is a “man.”

  1. Hello Michelle,
thank you for sharing your beautiful post and your genius idea of renaming certain male’s restricted job to a non gender bias description.
Like you mentioned ” doing so just reinforces the “male dominance” we are trying to get away from.” male dominance is everywhere in our society even our language reflects this gender bias. It’s not an easy task to change the whole society ‘s mind and specially men to give their male power away, but with more and more women challenging it and holding higher position it can be an easy transition to share this power for the benefit of the humanity.
I love your new terminology on any position make it based on merit and not related to the dominant sex.
    keep it up.

  2. Hello Michelle,

Thank you for your feedback on this topic. You stated you identify yourself as “Latina/Hispanic”, does society categorize you with race group or have their own depiction? I absolutely love the theory you chose and the visualization you provided for a better understanding. I agree that emphasizing a gender based on the occupation just gives it more power to assigned sex. The position should be equally shared because both sexes can complete the job.

  3. Hi Michelle,
The chart that you shared makes this topic even more clearer. Everything in this world seems to be focused on the man when most times the terms we use can just be generalized. Women are just as capable as men and vice versa, there shouldn’t be limitations placed on occupations and so on.

  4. Hi Michelle, the details that you provided made this topic that much simpler to comprehend. It seems that almost everything if not everything, focuses on the men/man more when most of the terms we use can be generalized. Emphasizing gender based occupations gives more power to a certain sex and I agree with this point you made. Women are and should be considered as equal because they are just as capable as men.
