Music in the Curriculum

“Where words fail, music speaks.” –Hans Christian Anderson

“If I didn’t think music could help save the human race, I wouldn’t sing.” –Pete Seeger

Music is a way of knowing, one of the multiple intelligences described by Howard Gardner, as essential as reading, writing and mathematics. Singing, dancing, listening to music, and creating music should be a part of every child’s daily experience in the early childhood classroom.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Explain how music supports children’s learning and development.
  • Create music-related learning activities designed to teach curriculum.

                                                        Music activity plan

Your theme and sub-theme:

Identity

Myself

 Describe your activity:

Learning the Alphabet through music. Singing the A’B’C’s….

The children sit in a circle, and the teacher is in the middle with a guitar. The teacher is playing an instrumental version of the Alphabet song on a speaker. The teacher starts to follow the rhythm of the song with the guitar, as the assistant teacher shows the children the letters of the alphabet in a book.  The teacher and young students sing along in unison from A-Z and end the sing-along by singing “Now I know my A’B’C’s, next time won’t you sing with me” ?

What materials will you need for this activity? Provide a detailed list. Remember the materials you will need to introduce the activity (e.g., book) and everything you will need to implement the learning activity, including set-up and clean-up.

– A Play-mat where the children can sit comfortably

– A Bluetooth speaker and an Apple Mac. Download YouTube App

–  A book with colorful letters made of cardboard from A-Z. Each letter describing an object

Example: “A is for Apple” “B is for boy”

Describe how you will introduce the activity and what the children will do. Describe the experience step by step.

I will encourage the young students to join in the circle. By turning on the music ahead of time, and allowing them to dance around and play for a few minutes. Then I would call their attention to silence, as they start to form a circle. After turning on the background music, the teacher’s assistant will join me with the book and then the singing would begin.
