                                  Dance/Creative Movement Activity

THEME: IDENTITY

SUB-THEME: MY FAMILY

Describe your activity:

After reading the book “Me and my Family tree” by Joan Sweeney, we will pretend grandma’s birthday party. All of the relatives should gather for grandma’s birthday: Uncles, Aunts and cousins. They all have “real” family names and acting appropriate of their age. We all seat during the table and enjoy our birthday dinner. After dinner all family will sing a family song “We are a Family” performed by Jack Hartmann and Sesame street’s “Family song”.

What materials will you need for this activity? Provide a detailed list. Remember the materials you will need to introduce the activity (e.g., book) and everything. You will need to implement the learning activity, including set-up and clean-up.

I will need a book that I will read the children before pretend birthday party. Then they all need to “dress up” as family members age appropriate. We will need to use kitchen area with kitchen playset, table and chairs. After “party” for clean-up we will use house cleaning set.

Describe how you will introduce the activity and what the children will do. Describe the experience step by step.

After reading the book, I will ask the children to share if they know their family members birthdays and how they celebrate grandparents’ birthdays. Then we will focus on setting the table. Dress up materials and songs will be provided. And then we will discuss why it is important to celebrate with whole family members.

What will children learn from your activity? Explain how it supports each of the developmental domains. Be specific. (I.e. fine motor skills through cutting, social and emotional learning, knowledge about particular topics.)

Fine motor skills = making a table set up and dress up.

Social and emotional learning = community conversations, sharing their thoughts and experience as a group.

Cognition = learning and understanding family events, recognizing and discussing differences and similarities.

Language = communicating with their own words with the classmates and learning new words.

Dance/Creative Movement Activity

Dance and creative movement engage the body and mind and help to develop memory, sequencing skills, analytical thinking and creativity, as well as physical motor coordination.

For this assignment, you are going to design a dance/creative movement activity related to one sub-topic in your curriculum unit. Your activity should be based upon one of the books you are using with this sub-topic. It must be designed to inspire thinking about the essential questions and learning goals of your curriculum theme.

Your activity should:

  • Be developmentally and culturally appropriate for students in a NYC Pre-K (3-5) class
  • Provide children the opportunity to be truly creative, using their bodies imaginatively.

Please use the Dance-Creative Movement Activity Planning template to design your activity. When you upload your file, please be sure that your name is in the title.
