My Social Distancing Piece

The artist that inspired me was Will Hillenbrand his art piece called, Winter into Spring, Cathedral Light. His piece of nature reminded me of my window view from my living room. To me it is a beautiful view since I moved from living in front of a building. I did a drawing piece of what I see when I look out of my window, to me it is a calming sight to see especially when the sun starts to set. This view is my first image of my first apartment that I am proud of. A place were I spent my time at home during covid.

  • The artist from the exhibit whose work inspired you and why.

I was inspired by Ashley Bryan, who drew the Flower Garden on the Patio, 2020. I really liked this piece and how he mentioned freedom and how it reminded him of back home.

  • The medium you chose to use (i.e., drawing, painting, sculpting, collage).

I drew this with color pencils because its easier to get more detail and it helps to be exact

  • What your art represents and why it is important to you.

Since the artist that inspired me spoke about his family and how he thought of back home. I thought about my mom and how she has plants all around our house. She keeps getting more and more and when I think of plants I think of her. She’s even mentioned how she wants me to keep taking care of them even after she’s gone. I love this piece and my mom and I just really connected with it, as it reminded me of her.

Exploring the Eric Carl Museum

Visiting the Eric Carl Museum made a big impression on me. Le Uyen Pham’s “Outside”, “Inside” particular became striking to me. This painting reminds me of how I spent my period with Lockdown and Covid. My apartment has a small balcony with an iron staircase attached in case of an emergency. I crawled out the window onto this balcony (usually, you can’t use it) and sat there almost all day. I was looking at a street that was absolutely empty and silent. Only one elderly couple was walking and my fun was watching them too. From such an active street, only the doomed sound of emergency vehicles could be heard constantly. And I thank God that I could still breathe fresh air and see the outside world, albeit from a small balcony and even a quiet and empty street. For me, the painting by artist Le Uyen Pham came closest to the theme of Lockdown. So, I want    to draw a girl siting on a small bench on a small balcony and watching an elderly couple.
Only a ball pen was used to create this drawing.

Seminar Project: Exploring the Eric Carle Museum

For your seminar project this week, you are going to take a virtual trip to the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Begin with the online exhibit: Art in Place: Social Distancing in the Studio

Take some time to really explore and appreciate the work of these amazing artists, whose work has enchanted children for decades.

Now you are going to create your own socially-distanced art using materials you have in your home:

  • Choose one of the artists from the virtual exhibit whose work speaks to you.
  • Using drawing materials, painting materials, sculpting materials, or collage materials, create your own artwork in the style of this artist.
  • Your art can represent any topic you choose. It can be realistic or abstract.
  • After you create your art, take a photograph and post the photograph and a short description of your art. In your description include:
    • The artist from the exhibit whose work inspired you and why.
    • The medium you chose to use (i.e., drawing, painting, sculpting, collage).
    • What your art represents and why it is important to you.
