When I was a child I was surrounded with a lot of children. Also many family members such as aunts and uncles, were teachers and professors. My childhood dream job was to be a teacher, because I had many influences and teaching was in our bloods basically. My family is very big and so their is a lot of children, growing up children divided into groups at least children in my family did, we were divided in groups like for example the bigger children hung out together and the smallest once hung out together and so on. In my group I was the oldest and we would always play the teacher game, where I was the teacher and my cousins and family members where my students. Since we had a lot of teachers in my family we had a large board with chalk and so when we would play we had many materials to use, I would give my cousins “tests” and pretend to grade them. I always wanted to be a teacher and found myself to still want to continue to pursue it in college. However, when I was in high school I had to make a difficult decision because as much as I love children, I also really loved the field of criminal justice, I wanted to be a detective because I find it really interesting something tat really catches my attention. My dream is to continue finishing college and getting my masters degree in teaching, and then maybe I will also pursue to get a degree and be a detective for some years then continue to work with children after. As of now I am focusing on my major and I am very exited to see where life takes me.
Edisa, thanks for sharing. Its good to be open about different fields. I am sure you will figure it all out!
Edisa — thanks for sharing your wonderful memories of being a teacher to your cousins, etc.! That sounds like so much fun! Being a detective also sounds intriguing!
When I was growing up I never dreamed of being related to child care, so my dream as a child doesn’t really connect to what today is my porpuse. I actually wanted to be a n amazona (a girl that rides horses lol). Since I grew up my family was involved in the horse-breeding business in colombia. My older siblings used to compete in presentations of the different modalities and for me that was an impossible because of my short age. We would spend every weeked at the farm, and even some week day evenings. I would practice over and over again. Bu sadly, right after my parents got divorced, my dad got out the business, and my siblings moved abroad after losing the interest on the equestrian activities.
Juli, thanks for sharing. I hope you figure it all out. We still have a lot of time and it’s good that you have few things planned out now!
Hey Juliana, thank you for sharing your story. I find it very interesting and I think that happens to all of us, as we grow up we kinda watch everyone around us and want the same thing , however as we grow we start to go in different directions.
Juli — Horses are majestic creatures! It sounds like you wanted to continue in the “family business” and follow in the footsteps of your siblings. That’s wonderful! What made you want to work with infants and toddlers?
Than you all for your comments. I decided I wanted to work with infants and toddlers after living the experience of being an Au pair, which consisted on a cultural exchange, coming to the US from Colombia to live and work as a nanny for an amarican family where I would learn from their culture, ways of communication, food etc, and also improve my english. In return, the family would learn from my culture and my language while I was a nanny for their kids. I was the nanny of three children, ages 10 months, 7 years old and 9 years old. I had an amazing experience living and learning together from every experience. Especially with the infant. we would spend our days together all day every day, and I ended up falling in love with te whole experience of having babies and toddlers around since I would take her to gym classes, parks etc. I have to mention that before coming to the US, I was on my second year of communication arts in Colombia an decided to take a break to live the Au pair experience. But after almost two years full of amazing experiences with the children I was spending my days with, I decided to change the plans. I wanted to learn more and more about the psychological part of working with children, and everything related to their development processes. So I went back to my country an came back as an international student. I enjoy be so-rounded by children, specially the little ones. I dream on becoming an excellent care giver and that’s why today I’m learning as much as I can about infancy and children development.
Juli that was a cool dream to be an Amazona
As a kid, I had always dreamt of being a teacher. I would pretend play with my friends where I would be a teacher and they would be students. I was also around children younger than me most of the time. I have a sister who is 5 years younger than me and I love spending time with her. I think having all these experiences really convinced me that this is what I was passionate about and this is something I really want to do in the coming future. People usually hold this mindset that teachers do not earn a lot of money, but I strongly believe that if someone is really passionate about something, then money should not come in between their decision. I am passionate about this and I hope that I build a good future for myself with the decision that I have made.
Hey Vashnavi, your story really was very similar to min (lol). I really enjoyed your response it felt like I was reading my own story :).
Vavi — So you (like Edisa) wanted to be a teacher from when you were young! That’s great that you knew your passion early! I agree, passion is connected to purpose!
Vavi we both have in common dreaming to be teachers.
When I was younger I wanted to be a dancer. I loved to dance and hang out with my friends at my dance class. I thought being a dance would be an easier way to get money while also doing something that I really really love. As I got older I realized although dancing is something that I really do like to do, I can still always just do it on my own time. In my mind, my young childhood dream occupation doesn’t exactly connect with the to being a infant teacher.
Isis — Dancing! How exciting! What type of dancing? You can dance in your own time, but you can also dance with children! Children love to dance!
When I was a child, I wanted to be a truck driver — big rigs, 18-wheelers. I am not sure why. I do remember playing “school” with my younger sister and friends, and I was the teacher. So I guess I knew from early on what I was meant to do! Although 1 day I may drive to BMCC in an 18-wheeler….
When I was younger I always knew I would be a teacher. I would bring lesson plans home that the teachers would give away at the end of the school year, to play “teacher” with my siblings. As I look back an examine my educational journey I realized because I’ve had very few teachers of color that dream became deferred. It also didn’t help growing up in a Haitian household and being constantly told that the only respected professions are doctors, nurses, and pastors. I’ve completed a medical assistant program along with a cna program only to realize that nursing was not what I wanted to do. It wasn’t until I worked side by side in a home daycare where that love for teaching was sparked again. I remember the day I got baptized and my pastors sisters whom didn’t know much about me at the time told me that she seen me becoming a teacher. Those words stuck with me forever. Having two children of my own also has made me a natural nurture and already a teacher to them as well. So as I continue this journey I’m looking forward to being able to be a role model for my students.
When I was younger I said I wanted to be a teacher and here I am trying to become an infant-toddler teacher. It connects to becoming an infant teacher because the dream hasn’t changed and I still have the motivation to continue this dream of mine.
