Module 6 Language Development Assignment 4 Self-Reflection

At the end of the semester you will develop a Self-Assessment of what you have learned which will help to determine your grade for ECE 209. In preparation for your Self-Assessment, answer the questions below; you will answer these questions at the end of each module so you have a record of what you have learned over the semester. You can answer the questions here on Open Lab or create a journal on Blackboard (which would be private).

  1. In this module, I learned that children learn language once they’re born. The interactions between them and their loved ones encourages them to communicate with them through language. What I found surprising was that as children grow older, their interest in certain things decreases. This module will better prepare me to work with infants because it taught me that the Infant stage is the best stage to teach in my opinion. If you teach an infant as young as they are and continue with their growth and development, it will have a positive outcome in their futures.

    1) In this week module i leaned about the importance of interactions in a child’s development. Babies learn language once they are brought in this world. The younger the child the better their development would be and they will develop to their best abilities.

Answer: In ths module i learned more about communitcation when it comes to infants and how important it really is that infants do learn how to communicate (in the correct way) . I also leanred more about my childhood as well. Learning more about children i begin to think about more on how my mother raised me and why cretan things as a child i wasnt able to do and things she just wouldnt do as a mom. I also learned about the family I interviewed. Such a amazing. Cant wait to show my final report on them 🙂

In module 6 I learned the different ways of how children develop language. I already knew that books were the best resource for kids when it comes to developing language in children. My son started using sentences at the age of 1. While he was in belly my favorite book to read to him “Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown”. I remember the first time I decided to read this book to him when he was born into this world. I first took this book again to read to him when he was 2 months ago. When I tell you tears came down my face of how his eyes widened up when I started reading to him amazed me so much. I knew then that babies learn language from inside the womb. My son at 9 months would go on his own to pick books out of his toy box and open them and act as if he was reading. Maybe one day I’d share a picture of him sitting on a baby chair with an open book in his face at only 8 months. Books are the best resource to turn to when teaching a kid language because the pictures and colors urge them to learn how to speak to which they achieve.

I learn that there are different ways for an infant to develop language. I learn that taking the time to sit and read to your infant help develop their language. I learn more about the family that i’m studying can’t wait to share the info with you guys. I learn a little bit more about myself in the process as well. my goal is to take whatever i learn in this module and the other modules an apply it to everyday life being around infant and toddlers.

  6. What I’ve learned in this module is that there are three different stages of social development for infants/children. Technology might be an easier way for the parent/teacher, but it may not be the same for the infant or child. Being able to take your time in socially interaction with them, even if its little things like reading a book or asking them questions can help grasp their understanding of communicating.

This week we learned about different language methods to help children and their development. We learned about what worked with families and what didn’t work with families as far as communication. We also learned a little bit about our colleagues and their favorite things to do.
This material will help me better prepare myself because I can take advice from the articles and readings or I can take advice from my colleagues.

  8. In this week modules I learnt ways to communicate with families with infants to engage and build partnerships such as check ins ,sharing information with families you don’t see daily. Communicate through phone calls, emails, or texts. Using time such as drop off and pick up time to communicate. In lecture I learnt about language development, that babies learn through serve and return exchanges, messages sent, messages received, messages returned and continual exchanges.
This will help me become a better infant teacher because it gives me more information I need to deal with the above subjects.

  9. In this weeks modules for ECE 209 Seminar and Lecture I gained insight on language/sound Development ( the different ways we can encourage/support them in this development) and the three theories (Nativist, Learning Reinforcement, Interactionist). Which is something that really shocked me, because I didn’t know there was more than one theory of how baby can learn a language. Not to mention, we are further learning about communication with families and the different practices involved.

For this week I have learned that without communicating with both families and children your job is not complete. Communication is essential for a successful program and classroom. Communicating with children you are making sure that the child feel like they belong even if they are infants. Communicating with parents also gives them a sense a belonging and makes the child development smoother and easier for you as a teacher to know how to help or motivate that child on a deeper level.

This week material will better prepare me in understanding that I need to establish communication from the beginning of the child’s time with me. I feel like if communication is establish in the very beginning everything else falls in place nicely. I have also learned not to be afraid to negotiate with families if its done in an appropriate and beneficial way. Always make sure we are listening to the parents actually listening and offer suggestions with evidence and always make them feel supported for any decision the parents make.
