Kovach & Da Ros-Voseles (2011)Review this Power Point (I narrate this Power Point in this video)
Your best friend heard about a web-based video series that claims that babies who watch the videos improve their language skills. The web-based videos are expensive, but your friend wants to do all she can to promote her child’s language development. She asks for opinion if she should buy the videos. Using evidence from each video, both articles, and the Power Point in this activity, explain to your friend:
- Should purchase the web-videos to support her language development? Why?
- Which theory of language development do you believe? Why?
- What else can she and infant teachers do to support her baby’s language development? For each idea you mention, explain how it specifically supports language development and communication skills. List ideas no one has mentioned yet!
I would suggest that my best friend does not purchase the web videos because even though babies may learn from them but it is not the same as reading to a baby yourself and exploring different activities, physically. I believe in the interactionist theory because when children are around loved ones and other children their age, they have the feeling and/or need to socially interact with them. Children learns to interact through language. Infant teachers and the parent can participate in physical activities with the baby, use body movements and face expressions to help the baby understand what is going on and help the baby verbally express that.
Should purchase the web-videos to support her language development? Why?
1) I suggest not to purchased the web videos because babies wont sit and watched them, the best way to support your babies language development is to read to them, speak to them on the daily basis.
Which theory of language development do you believe? Why?
2) I believe in interactionists approach by Vygotsky because children adapt easily to their surroundings and environment. When infants are around other infants or toddlers they are attentive to the sounds and voices so that gives them the desire to interact and speak.
What else can she and infant teachers do to support her baby’s language development? For each idea you mention, explain how it specifically supports language development and communication skills. List ideas no one has mentioned yet!
3) I believe if the parent and infant teacher consistently reads, or sing along songs to a child that would help the infant to interact with you and have the desire to speak.

1. Answer: My best friend should not purchase web-videos to support her child’s language development because studies report a link between television and language development in babies. The more time babies spend watching tv, the more slowly they learn to talk.
2. Answer: I do believe Jean Piaget theory, parents can shape activities in order to produce an environment where children can learn through experience, once the experiences are taught they will begin to understand and be able to communicate. his theory focuses not only on understanding how children acquire knowledge, but also on understanding the nature of intelligence.
3. Answer: Visit places while visiting these places explain to your child where they are and what they see and how the feel about what they see. Plan playdates this is the perfect time to communicate with your child with the objects you two play with , sounds he/she may hear, how something feels, etc. Listen and sing to music children love sounds and beats so if the song is catchy they will remember and even add their little dance moves.
1) Should purchase the web-videos to support her language development? Why?
I would suggest my friend to buy the web-videos that would support her babies language development because they are other ways that are cheap or to explore language through reading books. Babies learn best through sensory experiences (Gillespie, 2019).
2) Which theory of language development do you believe? Why?
One of the theory’s I do believe strong in is Noam Chomsky on nativist/innatist. I am convinced that we are all born with the ability to learn language because even while babies are in their mother’s bellies they are introduced to language and hearing language in the outside of the world from the inside. When they are born they are already familiar to this skill we all develop called language. Babies are actually born with this advantage of being able to communicate with us even on their first day of life. When a baby is hungry or in need of a diaper change or even discomfort, they are already used language to let families know their needs (Khan Academy, 2013).
3) What else can she and infant teachers do to support her baby’s language development? For each idea you mention, explain how it specifically supports language development and communication skills. List ideas no one has mentioned yet!
Some of the ideas that the mother and infant teachers can do to support their child develop language is using books as an direction of learning language. Books are a good resource to children to learn language because they become familiar with objects on the books which is also good for their cognitive development. When reading to her baby it’s also a good idea that her and infant teachers use different voices while while reading to the baby because this skill keeps them entertained which has advantages in focusing where they develop the later on helps them develop in learning how to read on their own (Gillespie, 2019)
1. Should purchase the web-videos to support her language development? Why?
Ans: i would tell my friend not to purchase the web-videos because babies won’t still and watch web-videos, the best way to support the baby language development is to read and speak to the baby everyday.
2. Which theory of language development do you believe? Why?
Ans: The theory 0f language development i believe in is Noam Chomsky nativist/innatist because children have the ability to learn language from the time their in the mother’s bellies. The first language babies hear are their mothers. Noam Chomsky believe that everyone has LAD (language acquisition device) in their brains that allows them to learn language. From birth to the age of nine is which a child is most likely to learn a language anything after nine years old make it a little difficult to do so. ( Khan Academy, 2013)
3. What else can she and infant teachers do to support her baby’s language development? For each idea you mention, explain how it specifically supports language development and communication skills. List ideas no one has mentioned yet!
Ans: I think that the mother and infant teacher should read to the child in their native language, ask questions, even if the baby is preverbal wait for the child’s response in their own way (body language, facial expression, sounds) before you start talking again. Read in animated voices this is a good way that shows that you’re interested and you enjoy reading. (Gillespie, 2019)
1) I would advise my bets friend to not purchase these web videos. There are way more beneficial ways to develop these language skills with your infant. Watching or using technology at a young age, and having an attachment could be harmful for the infant as they grow up. They may become dependent on technology.
2) The theory of language that I believe in is interactionist. Vygotsky focused on social learning and the zone of proximal learning. Social learning develops better when children in engaged in social interactions with others.
3) What she and the infant teachers can do is contribute to asking questions, socially interact with them even if it involves feeding or changing them. Reading a story book with pictures can also help.
Should purchase the web-videos to support her language development? Why? I would not suggest my friend to purchase web videos to support language development because it is important to teach language personally for example just talking to the baby as explained in the article acknowledge them in a conversation.
Which theory of language development do you believe? Why? I believe in Vgotsky’s theory because I think kids learn words by their surroundings and how to talk and pronounce things.
What else can she and infant teachers do to support her baby’s language development? For each idea you mention, explain how it specifically supports language development and communication skills. List ideas no one has mentioned yet!
Parents and infant teachers can use different sources to encourage language such as reading books, listening to music, visuals of words. Parents can also refrain from using baby talk.
Should purchase the web-videos to support her language development? Why?
No, i do not think my friend should buy web-videos to support her child language development because children best lean language through: Serve & Return- exchanges that foster language development. Communicating with those around them through speaking and body cues.
Which theory of language development do you believe? Why?
i believe the Interactionist theory because i’ve seen the proof of how social and biological factors have had on a child development through interaction. Such as, reading and singing that helps encourage child to want to speak.
What else can she and infant teachers do to support her baby’s language development? For each idea you mention, explain how it specifically supports language development and communication skills. List ideas no one has mentioned yet!
infant teachers can interactive with the infants and form strong attachments and relationship. They can express the meaning of language through signals using body language, analyzing non-verbal communication and sharing meaning through speaking. Somethings they can do to support language development and communication is by interacting in games, song and books. An idea can be to have a day at their care centers where its dedicated to language and have different game stations where child can explore language development in fun active ways.
1. Suggest my friend shouldn’t by the video babies develop language through serve and return with a trusted adult or caregiver message sent, message receive, message returned and continual exchanges. The video will not foster the serve and return.
2. The theory of language development I believe in is Vygotsky. He believe that social and biological factors have to interact in order for children to learn language. In the video it says children strongly desire to communicate with others such as the adults in their lives, and that desire motivates them to learn to communicate via language. we see their with crying and cooing.
3. She and infant teachers can support language development through having conversation with the infant and give the infant time to respond with cooing or babbling, also reading to the infant will help.
• Should purchase the web-videos to support her language development? Why?
If my best friend asked for my input on this purchase, I would advise her not to purchase these super expensive web-videos to support her language. I would advise her this because there are more effective ways to boost a baby’s language development at home without breaking the bank. Adding on, the TED talk: Patricia Kuhl points out how learning through a screen was not proven as effective as physically communicating with the baby face to face. Making the super expensive web-videos pointless.
• Which theory of language development do you believe? Why?
Out of the three language theories, a theory of language that I believe in is the Interactionist approach. Just like Vygotsky I too agree in two different components needing to be a part of learning in order for the children to learn/form a language development, which are biological and social.
• What else can she and infant teachers do to support her baby’s language development? For each idea you mention, explain how it specifically supports language development and communication skills. List ideas no one has mentioned yet!
Some things that an infant teacher can do to support a baby’s language development is acknowledging them by name, give the name baby the opportunity to communicate back, speaking directly to them, incorporate visual items, and just acknowledges the babies personal preferences (Voseles 2011). This ensures the baby they are respected and appreciated.
Xitlaly — Thanks for your comment. You wove the readings & materials from the module from the assignment in to your response. Babies learn language through interactions not from TV screens. According to Vygotsky, I wonder, what was another component important for a baby’s language development?
1:Should purchase the web-videos to support her language development? Why?
I believe that my friend should not purchase those web-videos but I also believe that if she purchase the web-videos my friend should practice with her child although in the long run it will not work because as adults it is very difficult to learn a new language although for a child who is from the ages birth to 7 it might not be so difficult when it comes to learning a new language ( TED talk video). So overall, I believe that my friend should not purchase the web videos because it has been studied with a group of children who were being introduced to the language Mandarin. These babies had 12 sessions of Mandarin on television and what they found out was that the US babies had not learned anything (Linguistics Genius of Babies TED talk: Patricia Kuhl). Vygotsky who believed that in order for a baby to learn language, a baby requires social and biological interaction. Because, interaction is a key factor in babies development ( Promoting Language and Literacy Video Kanopy) a Tv screen is not providing this crucial part in their learning.
2:Which theory of language development do you believe? Why?
I believe with Vygotsky theory of language development. Vygotsky believed that you need interactions of this language to be understood properly by the child. For example, when you in a classroom teaching children a new language you have materials that you can show them to understand the meaning of that word or maybe you make a sound in that language a child will memorize it.
3:What else can she and infant teachers do to support her baby’s language development?
For each idea you mention, explain how it specifically supports language development and communication skills. List ideas no one has mentioned yet!
I believe that infant teachers aside from making sure they are talking to babies all the time they need to be able to actually make eye contact with the child and use simple language or advance language depending on how you think the child will receive it. Sometimes, teacher might talk talk not giving the child the chance to answer with their body language or even a sign. When the child answers make sure we are building on that conversation so the child can be aware also on everything is going on around them as well.
Patty — Thanks for your comment. You clearly connected your response to the materials in this assignment! Babies learn language from their interactions with other people, which is why the videos would not work. Vygotsky believed that interactions were important for babies to learn language. I wonder, what other factors impact babies learning language, according to Vygotsky?
