Ethics Assignment

On Tuesday April 27th the ethical issue that was in hand was about online learning and if it should continue or go back to in person. The class discussion was being debated between two sides. We had to focus on mainly elementary school students, but every student in general as well. In the side I was in was to try and explain why we should continue online learning and not go to school. All our group members came up with all good reasonings on why we shouldn’t go back to school. The points our side came up with were all really good. The points where online classes prevent less bullying, yes bullying may still happen online, but they aren’t able to see you in person and don’t really have a reason to do any harm at all, pretty much less bullying to be exact. Another point our group came up with was remote learning can help students become more independent and depend on themselves, this is really good for students to correct their mistakes and really work on them and not copy or depend on others to do schoolwork for them. Most importantly remote learning stops the spread of coronavirus, although there is vaccines and everyone is eligible we don’t know where the virus is exactly and it can spread very easily especially with all these variants and kids touch anything and can possibly effect the teachers. This was our side of the discussion and they were good points. This was personally my way of looking at things, some part of me wants to go back and wants to learn in person but then again me personally I am in a household where my parents are both over the age of 50 and I don’t want to risk anything happening to me and especially them, vaccine or no vaccine we still must be careful everywhere we go and must try and stay protected.

Don’t get me wrong our points where good but the other side had amazing and very good points as well. The points they made were in school classes are better than online because it helps stop or prevent students from getting distracted and focus on school and can be really good for some students who are living in unstable homes. Another great point would be in school students engage and build social skills that you need once you are out in the real world, in my opinion this is a debatable one because regardless of whether it is online or in person you build those skills eventually with confidence. I personally have built those skills being online rather than in person for some weird reason. One point they also talked about was how teachers where one of the first to be eligible for vaccination and how there was a study that shows kids are not likely to transmit the virus, yes that may be true, but we never know to be honest, we never know where the virus can be and usually elementary teachers are more touchy and have to be there with kids which can be bad because of this virus. Teachers wouldn’t be able to help them go somewhere by holding their hand or giving them a hug whenever they need one and many other points. The last point the other side mentioned was going back to classes gives the opportunity for parents to go back to work and not pay for a babysitter when times are tough with this pandemic. These all were great points, but I still believe wat me and my side came up with are good points why we shouldn’t go back to school and classes. We have to be able to not try and forget that the virus is still out there, I feel like it is still too early to back. Slowly but surely, we will get things back to normal but for right now we have to see reality and not really risk our own lives and can possibly be saving more lives by preventing physical contact and classes.

As we have seen in 2020, It is true that organizations are facing an increase need for managers, as risks organization increase. There are many problems and risks that effect many businesses and companies in different ways. Obviously there has been risks for a long time but are slowly changing. One new risk business is facing now would be Coronavirus pandemic. Businesses need to try and work on making their businesses or companies have healthy conditions and a safe workplace. Companies have an issue of putting their employees and clients at risk for getting Coronavirus. Protecting their employees will have an effect on their reputation. A company that doesn’t pay attention to the virus can seriously be impacted on their reputation and not wanted to take a part of. Giving employees and providing them with safe practices can and will help them understand how the virus can really affect and impact the people as a whole and the workplace. Seeing the way, the Corona virus impacted many businesses, Executives need to help manage all these issues coming from the virus. This is very important step for businesses and companies must take to be successful during this pandemic.

There are many ways that organizations can prevent these risks from coming into fruition. One way these companies can prevent these risks would be cleaning and making sure they are safe should be the main goal. There are definitely way more than a dozen people going around and touching lots of things in businesses and companies, Businesses should make cleaning their number 1 priority to try and keep everyone safe. Cleaning from when they open to when they close should be the goal. Like how many businesses today are making sure that everyone who enters the business or store should be wearing masks to not only keep themselves safe but everyone around them is another way that organizations can prevent risks. Checking the customers temperature whether it is from the forehead or the wrist whenever they come in can also be a way to prevent risk. This has to be taken very seriously alongside make a strong statement in the work environment, so every employee knows where the business is and has to be towards this pandemic.

This virus is very serious, and people don’t take it as serious as it should be taken, yes there may be a lot of mixed opinions but one thing everyone should acknowledge is that this is very serious, and businesses must take precautions to keep everyone safe. I have honestly always tried and be as safe as possible whenever I can when I go out or go to places, following the protocols is very important. These new threats will affect a lot of workers decisions. As for me personally going into work and asked to do something has always been my priority. Personally, I can deal with anything they ask me to do, and I will get it done. If I personally don’t feel safe or well, I would just simply reach out to the organization and let them know that I don’t feel safe or I feel bad in some sort of way, I would do this in order to prevent anything more than what it is. Talking and helping other people may not be as easy as how it was before. This is because we don’t really know where people have been or what they have been doing outside the workplace. Obviously, we have to be safe so that is complicated but with all safety precautions taken we can make it much easier and safer. At the end, no one really has control over what happens around their surroundings. By taking these precautions you are doing everything possible to bring safety to your own health and everyone around you.

Benefits

There were a couple of examples that I saw in this assignment where I interview close friends or relatives and asked them about the job they are currently in and the jobs benefits.

Esteban is a worker that has been working in target for about 1 year and 3 months.

What benefits are you offered in your workplace?

Answer: I get 10% off everything I buy, I get vacation, national holidays, personal days and well-being time. Adding on to that I have always been told about short term and long-term disability insurance. I’ve never used this, but I get dental insurance, daycare flexible spending account that I haven’t used at all. And what’s called “Life Insurance”. These are all benefits I am allowed and receive but I haven’t really used any but the 10%.

What benefits mean the most to you and why?

Answer: I would say maybe the dental insurance and the “Life insurance” because it shows that the company obviously cares about you and want what’s best for you in the company.

Do you enjoy working at your workplace?

Answer: Yes, I do enjoy working here, although it doesn’t seem like the best job, I actually enjoy being here and feel cared for, and respected as a person.

How come you haven’t used any of the benefits given except the 10% one?

Answer: To be honest I haven’t really needed any except calling off for a week over a personal problem but other than that never really needed to use them. I am thinking about using some in the future if I am still working here.

Pablo is my cousin that works as a bar tender in Rainhas Churrascaria which is a well-known Brazilian bar, has been working as one for about 2 years and about 5 months at the local.

What benefits are you offered in your workplace?

Answer: Well as a bar tender I have benefits such as paid holidays and vacations, since our restaurant is big, we receive health insurance, sick pays and every day is pay day if I am being honest.

What benefits mean the most to you and why?

Answer: If I am being honest the benefits that mean the most to me would be that we get health insurance and that every day is pay day. Simply because of the tips they receive with not only the people at the bars but in general. I wouldn’t say famous people come but people that are wealthy show up and eat here and we have to obviously treat them good, not saying we don’t treat our customers good in general but obviously you try to impress the wealthier.

Do you enjoy the position you work as?

Answer: Yes, I do enjoy it, I genuinely enjoy working as a bar tender, I love making the drinks or just pouring them and doing it well, it’s always fun seeing new faces and for the people that come here a lot we kind of catch up on life since we know each other. Especially if its sports, the fan base we get here is funny sometimes.

Has covid changed any of your benefits or affected your workplace?

Answer: Well, covid affected everyone so we weren’t alone, there were times in the summer where the bar was completely empty, and it would only be 3 or 4 workers here working and it was tough with the tips and as a whole, but we are back on track as of recently.

I had no idea the amount of benefits my friend Esteban had, he only uses the 10% one obviously because it is in store and maybe the best one, I believe. But the benefits they receive aren’t bad, my friend should maybe start and using them while he has a chance to be honest. I feel like jobs started being more precautionary and in a sort of way started caring more about their workers because of covid in my opinion which is good and make them feel safe and cared for. As for my cousin Pablo his benefits are really good as well such as health benefits and the pay day every day. Both the people I interviewed really enjoy working in their positions and have good benefits that are really good. They are well respected and cared for in both jobs, but some workers have more valuable benefits then others, pay could possibly be the most important aspect for some but no all.

Retention Assignment

    • What do you think is the most demotivating part of Harper’s job?

I feel like what is demotivating Harper Jones would be the way she isn’t getting recognized with the amount of work and extra work she has been doing. I can also see another reason to be that her boss left the organization which must have been hard for her since they have been working together and had a strong connection together. Harper has been struggling in her communication and work relationship with her new boss David. David is also lacking in the workplace by not communicating with the team as a whole and not visualizing what Harper is doing out there. Harper has been feeling very unappreciated and unrecognized which I believe to be the main reason why she feels demotivated. When there is no communication between the boss and employees there is a lack of chemistry, lack of leadership and can affect the workplace as a whole

    • If you were an HR manager meeting with Harper’s supervisor, David, what advice would you give to help them re-engage Harper?

Being the HR manager, the first thing I would do is to meet with David and see how he feels about the whole situation to hear his part first. After this meeting I would let him know and show him that first thing in a workplace should be to make sure every employee feels greeted and very appreciated for the work they are doing. As for Harper, I will make her and David sit down together to see where they are, she has been in the company for 4 years so this wouldn’t be new for her which is a big highlight for her. I personally feel that Harper should know her position in this job and that spot would be a higher role than what she has at the moment or possibly if she still needs a couple more years then lower her workload which would up lift her spirit once again with her job. Most importantly that they will speak about this why not set a goal for the company as a whole to be on the right path again? Harper needs to get recognized more often and not feel worth less in the company, David should start checking up on not only Harper but everyone in the job. Doing all this can put them on track and up lift Harper and the rest of the guys again as a whole.

    • What would be the downside of losing Harper as an employee?

Losing an employee that loves to work in a company can really affect the company a lot, it can impact the company in many ways. It will be a huge downside if they end up losing Harper because Harper was an excellent employee that naturally loved working for the company. She loved doing what she was doing which is amazing for a company to have someone like that working for them. Losing an employee in general causes the job to find someone new, training them and expecting them to live up to the expectations Harper once reached. Someone like Harper is someone you don’t want to lose in any company because she was pretty much the heart of the company and I don’t really anticipate the company to do so well without her presence in the company.

Personality Test Assignment

Personality Test assignment
After taking the 16 personality test my personality type is a Defender personality. The traits I got from this test was my mind is more introverted than extraverted. I am very observant, I tend to have emotions then thinking, I am more judging than prospective and very turbulent. I have to agree with these traits because I think it honestly represents me as a person. This assessment made me actually see my strengths and weaknesses that I have, I usually get told some of the traits that I received but some really surprised me reading them.

The strengths and weaknesses that I got from the test results and that I say would be me as a whole would be that I am supportive, reliable and patient, adding to that I say I am also imaginative and observant which helps and pretty much shows who I am. As for the weaknesses or challenges I am shy, I take things too personally, I tend to repress my feelings, overload myself, I am reluctant to change and I’m too altruistic. These strengths and weaknesses really show who I am as a person, I’m not really proud of my weaknesses but there’s nothing to be ashamed of because you can fix that and I have been trying and I will continue to try to not have these struggles anymore.
Overall I agree with some of the traits or the description but like I said earlier there were some traits I don’t think particularly are who represent me as a person. I can see which ones are my strengths and weaknesses but I would consider seeing more strengths than weaknesses in my results. Some characteristics that I see on the test results have and will help me in life and in a work environment as well. The strengths that I would say that represent me are that I have excellent analytical abilities. Saying this means that I have well-developed people skills and robust social relationships which does explain why I like helping people out when they come to me for help or just need help in general. Defenders also are very supportive, super reliable, patient, being imaginative and observant also is a strength in my opinion, alongside Defenders are Enthusiastic and very loyal. The best part about all of this would be Defenders have good practical skills as I said earlier helping others out. Being Reliable and Patient is a trait that I would say is really important just because I would consider myself very careful and I take a steady approach and bend with the needs of the situation so I can accomplish the goal with it either being at home or in a work environment. I do this instead of leaving things half finished and rushing and I just simply take my time with things which helps me a lot. I do tend to be very imaginative and observant which also benefits me. For example whenever I usually get told something from a friend or co worker that is a problem to them instead of going on what I think is the best option for whatever the case may be I usually put myself in there shoes and see the outcomes and what can or may happen to them so at the end of the day it does nothing more then to benefit them. I would say that these traits really stand out to me because it just shows who I am as a person.
A few challenges that I would consider that came out to be a part of this test results would be in some occasions being very humble and shy, taking things too personally, I tend to repress my feelings, overload myself, reluctant to change and I’m too altruistic. I don’t necessarily disagree with these weakness or challenges but regardless I feel like I have gotten to be much better at them for the past year or so. One concern that I am having would be that I don’t think that being too altruistic is a bad thing or a weakness. In my understanding I feel like being warm, and a good-natured person isn’t a bad thing. I feel like letting things slide and believing that things will get better soon isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I feel like someone shouldn’t be that way but it isn’t a bad trait to have if that makes any sense. I feel like most of these traits do represent my weaknesses to some extent and does in some occasions affect my personal life but I don’t think some of the weaknesses I have will affect or be a part of a job environment.

I feel like these strengths and weaknesses are a huge part of my personal life instead of my work life. The strengths I have mostly impact my personal life because I’m pretty sure everyone can agree but when it comes to work you have to be professional and not put what you are currently feeling or whatever situation you are in with your work place. Adding on to the weaknesses that came up on my results shows how it can affect my personal life for example I feel like overloading themselves affects me which causes stress when I have so many problems in life or with school and it just takes over my mental health which I can easily get over with but it is very stressful in some sort of way. I also feel like repressing my feelings can also affect my personal life because I am usually the one to be very quiet, sensitive and very private unless someone reaches out to me first which can be an issue. If I have a problem I am not the one to personally just go all out and share whatever I am thinking which can be bad but good at the same time.
Adding all together I feel like personality tests should not determine whether a candidate is right for a role or to be hired in a job. It can be good to know your personality tests for some jobs and can be very beneficial for some but I personally feel like it shouldn’t determine if you are right for the role. This is because I feel like it isn’t surely accurate and I feel like selecting someone for the right role should be based on experience, knowledge and skill that can or has been shown before.

Richard Ledesma LinkedIn Assignment

One of the biggest take away from our live session with Annie and Tiffany was when our class got separated into groups. We got to discuss our biggest concerns when going into a interview. We got to talk about some of our fears and after our small group talk we asked Annie and Tiffany how we can be better and not be so concerned from them. We also got to see how Annie and Tiffany got where they are now in their companies. It showed the dedication someone has to put to be in that position and get anywhere in life.

Equal Rights Assignment

Richard Ledesma                                                                                   February 6th, 2021

Bus 311-1801                                                                                         Professor Buckler

The Equal Rights legislation in the U.S was and possibly still has affected more than half of the U.S as a whole. What exactly is the Equal Rights Legislation act? You may be asking yourself. This act was a proposed amendment to the United States where it guaranteed equal legal rights for all citizens in the U.S no matter what sex they were. This was supposed to be the end of the distinctions of both Men and Women, Examples like Divorce, Properties, Employment availability, and just Human rights in general. After watching the film “On the Basis of Sex” talking about and re living the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg really made me excited or some sort of joy towards women. It made me also realize that women have come a long way but there is still work to be done. To put it into simpler terms Ruth never gave up as every woman should, not only women but Men as well. Ruth was super relentless and wasn’t afraid of anything that got put in her way. Ruth was a mother, a Wife, and a Harvard Law student. She really showed the struggle of Women in the 1960s. Ruth studied or practiced her Law teaching skills to women and also practiced law by becoming a volunteer attorney being a Wife and a Mother. Ruth throughout the movie showed and demonstrated that just because Men and Women have what’s called a “Specific Role” in society doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of achieving success. Ruth believed that because of political theories the courts made wrong decisions and that precedent does not always appeal in court cases. She studied the Laws super well and the court even tried to confuse and fight against her, but Ruth beat the odds, mastered it and bought it against them pretty much outsmarting them in other words.

Ruth was the exact definition of a Smart Women and a Leader and just because she was a Women was not afraid to challenge a Man while keeping up with her honor and nobility as a Women with equal rights. Ruth understood her role and the role of a Man when she began law school. Ruth didn’t just support and be biased towards women she wanted what was right alongside equal and fair treatment for men. She took advice from everyone and everything and learned from it, whenever her mentors and other Men had any suggestions for her, she took them and really focused on them and tried and actually learned from them. Ruth noticed that there were certain barriers that pretty much held back Americans, when she noticed that she urged the courts to extend laws and use their power. Ruth overall captured everyone’s attention, from her personality to her style of being fearless. She was a very powerful Women that proved it on and off the court as we use in basketball terms.

Throughout the years in the movie Ruth experienced multiple examples of “Gender Discrimination”. For example, she got rejected by 12 law firms for being a woman. Ruth really took a “Stand” and pretty much be the man to try and change the way the world was viewing both genders. Ruth wanted to be heard and she did everything she could do make that happened. Ruth knew that the system had to be worked on she made it change. Ruth made the future bright for all women and even future children. Who would’ve thought she would make this happen years ago? Absolutely no one because only some believed and one of them was Ruth. The world as a whole knew who Ruth Bader Ginsburg was. Many changes were made but discrimination still exists not only here in the U.S but all over the world.

Women have come a long way like I mentioned earlier but there are still lots to be done. Ruth has become a big inspiration to Women. Women and Men are different in certain aspects, but no one deserves to be underneath one another. I personally know women that study law and are on track to graduating on high standards. There is still changed to be made which is crazy to even acknowledge or even think that. It is 2021 and there is no such thing as equal rights which is sad to see but hopefully things change.

Richard Ledesma

Hello , My name is Richard Ledesma I am a Business management major. I don’t really have any hobbies except for sports. Ever since the pandemic that’s all I’ve been watching and trying to focus more on my family and my education as well, I am very excited for this class and ready for what’s to come.
