Mi nombre es Sheyla Díaz, tengo 22 años y actualmente estoy en mi último semestre en BMCC. Nací en la República Dominicana y viví allí hasta los 14 años, durante los cuales asistí a 5 instituciones educativas diferentes, incluyendo 4 públicas y un colegio privado. Mi experiencia educativa en la República Dominicana abarcó hasta el primer año de bachillerato (noveno grado en los Estados Unidos).
A los 15 años, llegué a los Estados Unidos y después de dos meses en la ciudad de Nueva York, al finalizar el verano, inicié el proceso de matriculación en una nueva escuela. En la primera escuela a la que asistí, intentaron ubicarme en el octavo grado, a pesar de que correspondía al décimo grado según el sistema educativo dominicano. Posteriormente, en la segunda escuela a la que asistí y donde finalmente me gradué, solo me quitaron un año, aunque aún considero que dos años menos fue demasiado. Más tarde, me di cuenta de que muchos de mis compañeros también enfrentaron desafíos similares.
Mi rendimiento académico experimentó un cambio significativo después de comenzar mis estudios en los Estados Unidos. Aunque siempre he tenido dificultades para concentrarme en clase, al llegar aquí, me esforcé más por mejorar mi rendimiento académico y le dediqué más tiempo a mis estudios. Aunque la concentración aún es un desafío, me gradué de la escuela secundaria durante la pandemia y comencé mi travesía en BMCC.
Inicialmente, opté por una carrera en psicología, pero debido a problemas de salud mental e indecisión, decidí tomar un descanso de un semestre. Después de investigar y reflexionar sobre mis intereses y habilidades, encontré mi pasión en la carrera de Lenguaje Moderno con especialización en traducción e interpretación al español. Regresé a la universidad con renovada energía y determinación para completar este proceso.
Actualmente, estoy trabajando en el campo educativo con niños, lo cual ha despertado mi interés en la posibilidad de trabajar en la educación o la salud, específicamente en traducción. Aunque aún no estoy segura de cuál será mi próximo paso, estoy segura de que mi futuro profesional estará vinculado al ámbito de los idiomas, ya que me gustaría trabajar con más de dos idiomas, incluyendo inglés y español.

My name is Sheyla Díaz, I am 22 years old, and I am currently in my last semester at BMCC. I was born in the Dominican Republic and lived there until the age of 14, attending 5 different educational institutions, including 4 public schools and one private school. My educational experience in the Dominican Republic extended up to the first year of high school (ninth grade in the United States).
At the age of 15, I arrived in the United States, and after two months in New York City at the end of the summer, I began the enrollment process at a new school. In the first school I attended, they tried to place me in the eighth grade, even though I should have been in the tenth grade according to the Dominican education system. Later, in the second school I attended and where I eventually graduated, they only took away one year, although I still consider two years less to be too much. Later on, I realized that many of my peers faced similar challenges.
My academic performance underwent a significant change after starting my studies in the United States. Although I have always had difficulty concentrating in class, upon arriving here, I made a greater effort to improve my academic performance and dedicated more time to my studies. Although concentration is still a challenge, I graduated from high school during the pandemic and began my journey at BMCC.
Initially, I opted for a major in psychology, but due to mental health issues and indecision, I decided to take a one-semester break. After researching and reflecting on my interests and skills, I found my passion in the Modern Language major with a specialization in translation and interpretation in Spanish. I returned to college with renewed energy and determination to complete this process.
Currently, I am working in the field of education with children, which has sparked my interest in the possibility of working in education or health, specifically in translation. Although I am not yet sure what my next step will be, I am certain that my future profession will be linked to the field of languages, as I would like to work with more than two languages, including English and Spanish.
