Abstract:
My project will attempt to understand the positive and negative impacts that hip-hop has on American society, how much these impacts changed the world today, and what we can learn from these impacts to find ways to fix negatives that hip-hop is talking about but simultaneously influencing, to an extent. Everything has a good and a bad. Hip-hop is great for teaching people to rebel against racism and being their most authentic version of themselves, as well as bringing communities together. However, there are also negative aspects of the genre (homophobia, drug and gang culture, etc.). I will create a survey for BMCC students and faculty to understand the impact hip-hop has on their lives. I am also curious about why my classmates listen to hip-hop, and what might be wrong with the genre to make it healthier and open to all.
