Abstract:
We are developing a method to measure the R value (thermal resistance of insulation) of water filled vessels using inexpensive equipment (digital kitchen thermometer and a clock) and some mathematics. In industrial settings, the R value is measured using a heat flux sensor, which often sells for about $300 and up. We’ve applied (tested) our model by estimating the R value of a cup of water using time temperature data, and then using the R value and differential equations to estimate the time it takes to heat the water in the cup using an immersion heater, taking into account the heat loss or gain to the surroundings. So far, the project’s emphasis is on mathematical modeling.
