Question 1

According to Louis Althusser, a Repressive State Apparatus is a system in which individuals are controlled employing fear and violence. This means that the government puts in a mechanism to control the people. Through this system, the police, courts, prisons, etc., are used to instill fear into the general public. With this system, people are threatened with violence should they not heed the rules and regulations. This is why Althusser calls it repressive because it threatens people from enjoying their rights and freedoms.

Question 2.

Ideological State Apparatuses functions through ideology. Here, institutions such as the church and schools play a significant role in controlling how people should behave in society. People are thought to be respectful and law-abiding. Violence is not prevalent in the ideological state apparatus as it aims at making individuals become patriotic and good citizens. It is institutions such as family, religion, churches, and schools that culminate this excellent behavior in the people to become good subjects.

Question 3.

  1. What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”? Can we explain his choice of words here. Give an example. According to Althusser, Repressive State Apparatus is defined as a controlling mechanism used through fear of violence factors used upon authorities, which includes law enforcement, courts and prisons. Althusser considers it “repressive” to emphasize that the social or political system will inhibit the freedom of an individual or group of people to showcase suppression. It declares that our freedom as a citizen can be stripped away immediately by authority to maintain foreable regulation.

2. Let’s do the same for the Ideological State Apparatuses. What are they, how do they seem to work?

Ideological State Apparatuses are used with institutions such as schools, universities, churches, family, media, trade unions, and law, which are typically not run by the state, but are used as masks to hide the true agenda of the state. Those institutions with “masks”, communicate the values of the ruling class as original ideas. This is done to maintain order in a society, and above all to reproduce capitalist relations of production. Ideological state apparatuses prevent change to the status quo and maintain the status quo by giving you a “choice”.

3. Important: this question will appear on our exam: How are the Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses different from each other? What is the difference between the two?

The difference between Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses is it’s functions. Repressive State Apparatus is represented through a centralized organization under the leadership of the classes of power, however Ideological State Apparatuses uses less tension compared to repressive. 4. Post an example of ideology. This could be a piece of writing, an image, video, pdf document, visual art, or music, clip from a movie. Next to your example, specify if this is an example of repressive or ideological apparatuses at work. I’ll start off by giving an example.

This is an example of ideology, which demonstrates how the media / school tells all students they need to get through high school and get to college because they’ll need a college degree but there are people who don’t need college degrees and who can do plenty of work like skilled laborers (lineman, electrician, plumbers).

Maria Kaye- Representative and Ideological Apparatus

Representative Apparatus refers to individuals following a system, in which case they may fear. This specific status reflects authority figures in the community, that even just the visuals can cause fear which have consequences that are tied to it. For example, if a hit and run occurs, the driver fears the consequences and therefore left the scene.

On the other hand, Ideological status apparatus are embedded by a sort of institution, family, mass media or political party. These are characteristics that can be learned or taught over time, this also does not involve violence. It is set for individuals to keep up with traditions or customs one may have. It can also be defined as being controlled by individuals. It can be seen in the way children obey their schedules and follow them as close as they can.

The biggest difference between representative and ideological apparatus is one creates fear, while the other doesn’t. Representative represents individuals feeling threaten in their day to day life and knowing the authority figures and the consequences that come with it. Ideological apparatus can revolve around things that are learned or adopted by people from different institutions, either learning it from a young age or as an adult.

This Picture represents Repressive ideology. The words printed on the hands represents the groups of people that may fear authority. The words printed on the cuffed hands also represent the groups that suffer due to violence.

DB 3.2

1.What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”? Can we explain his choice of words here? Give an example.

The repressive state apparatus refers to the police, courts, prisons, and military. When the police and their specialized auxiliary teams “cannot control the situation,” they will directly intervene as an additional amount of pressure to suppress them. It also refers to the heads of state and the government above all this and administrative agencies. Which is mainly legal violence that the government would choose to do when thighs are out of control.

  1. Let’s do the same for the Ideological State Apparatuses. What are they, how do they seem to work?

The ideological state apparatus is the real material basis on which the “political unconscious” depends, is the territory for institutionalized discipline and legalized “production” of individuals, and a set of seemingly mild but violent social control tools.

  1. Important: this question will appear on our exam: How are the Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses different from each other? What is the difference between the two?

There is only one repressive state apparatus, but there are many ideological state apparatuses. And the unified repressive state apparatus is entirely in the public domain; on the contrary, most of the ideological state apparatuses, which are decentralized, are part of the private domain. Churches, parties, labor unions, families, certain schools, most newspapers, various cultural speculations, etc., are all private.

  1. Post an example of ideology. This could be a piece of writing, an image, video, pdf document, visual art, or music, a clip from a movie. Next to your example, specify if this is an example of repressive or ideological apparatuses at work.
