Discussion 3.1

An ideology refers to a set of ideas that are mostly related to politics, policy making, and economic aspects. The primary aim of these ideas is to make the world a better place. The term contains a self-explanatory theory that attempt to define and explain politics through integration of different ideas.

I believe, the term ideology represents a vision for the community, and the set the bar for politicians to set their goals when serving the society. The emphasis is to appeal and implement what is good for the community. An example includes a republican or democrat. The groups have political freedom whose goals are destined to help the public.

Question 2

Conservative ideology favors use and application of traditional ideas. This concept aims at embracing change and innovation while maintaining and respecting traditional values. Liberal ideology on the other hand refers to willingness to accept and respect individual’s ideas. This implies that every leader who uses liberal ideology has to promote the right of individuals and also exercise democracy.

Question 3

Althusser explains that the term ideology always exists in a practical environment. It has no history, however, the content of current ideologies may change while the form may remain the same.

Dwayne Wellington-Repressive and Ideological

  1. A Repressive State Apparatus is consisting of the army, the judiciary, the police, and the prison system. It is operated primarily by mean of mental and physical coercion and violence. Althusser call it Repressive because it states the difference forms of apparatus, whether its ideological or formal. This includes the army, the administration, the government, the prisons, the courts, the police and so forth.

2. The Ideological State Apparatuses exist for the most outside of the public sphere and it includes institutions such as church, schools, the family, political parties, trade unions, mass media, and culture. The ideological state apparatus work because they teach or use other methods other than physical violence to achieve the same objectives as Repressive State Apparatus. They crate ways instead of expressing and imposing order, through violence repression, the Ideological State Apparatus disseminate ideologies that reinforce the control of a dominant class.

3. The differences from Repressive State Apparatus the and the Ideological State Apparatuses are, the repressive state apparatus functions as a unified entity (an institution), unlike the ideological state apparatus, which is diverse in nature and plural in function. The difference between both Repressive and Ideological are, the repressive state apparatus functions by violence and whereas the ideological state apparatuses functions by ideology.

4. The image below represent the Ideological State Apparatus.

Jennifer Louis- Repressive v. Ideological state Apparatus

1.According to the video, Repressive State Apparatus are defined as a magnification of discipline such as police courts and prisons. Althusser uses the word repressive to help us understand the ability of forces and freedom can be taken away.  In other words, most people are prompted to obey because they fear the  consequences. For example, if someone stole a bar of chocolate in a store, the owner will most likely call the cops. The police will  arrest the person  at the moment but the court might proceed with less aggressive consequenses as just paying a fine.

2.Ideological state apparatuses are mostly thought of as schools and academic institutions. These are places that prepare you to consume ideologies. All kids in school are subjected to the same ideologies in class. They encourage discussions and growth of the mind about different ideas and beliefs.

3.Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses are different from each other because ideology uses less force and misleads false compontisions that would not really work nor change anything whereas repressive commends everyone and you have to deal with distress. Also repressive use force to make people intimidated to comply with the rules.

4.This is a link of an image that shows a repressive apparatus and states the reason why the school system considers discipline very important.  This display of the education system uses rules to teach students on how to follow and obey them.

Discussion Board 3.2

Okay, let ‘s go to the questions, consider the following:

  1. What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”? Can we explain his choice of words here. Give an example.

2. Let’s do the same for the Ideological State Apparatuses. What are they, how do they seem to work?

3. Important: this question will appear on our exam: How are the Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses different from each other? What is the difference between the two?

4. Post an example of ideology. This could be a piece of writing, an image, video, pdf document, visual art, or music, clip from a movie. Next to your example, specify if this is an example of repressive or ideological apparatuses at work. I’ll start us of off by giving an example.
