Mi nombre es Natalie, tengo 24 años y estoy un estudiante internacional en BMCC. Es mi cuarto semestre. Vivo en Brooklyn pero originalmente soy de Alemania. Nací y viví acá por 20 años, con un “descanso” de dos años ya que decidí ir a los Estados Unidos como Au Pair (es una niñera que vive y trabaja con una familia de acogida) después de terminar la escuela secundaria. Unas de mi pasiones siempre eran viajar y trabajar con niños y por eso creía que era la mejor cosa que podía hacer después de graduar. Me ayudó mucho madurar como persona, podía ver muchos lugares, vivir la cultura americana y hacer un montón de amigas de todo el mundo. También tenía la oportunidad de estudiar en una universidad americana. Regresar por mi casa en Alemania después de estos dos años fue una de las cosas más difíciles que he hecho en mi vida hasta ahora. Sabía que quería estudiar en la universidad ya que siempre he disfrutado ir por la escuela y aprender cosas nuevas y por eso empecé a estudiar enseñanza de la escuela primaria, pero ya no me sentí tan feliz en mi país como antes. Además, me di cuenta que no quería una carrera que directamente está relacionada a niños, aunque todavía me gustan muchos los niños. Como me interesan mucho los idiomas, decidí de hacerlos parte de mi vida profesional. Por eso regresé por los Estados Unidos para proseguir con mi licenciatura acá y, como antes, no me arrepentí de esta decisión. Estudio ahora traducción ingles-español y disfruto mucho mis estudios hasta ahora. Voy a seguir estudiando en una universidad pronto que me ilusiona mucho. Estoy agradecida mucho de que puedo hacer una pasantía este verano (también porque tengo la oportunidad de incluir mi lengua materna alemán), ya que tenía ganas de obtener experiencia como traductora. Todavía no estoy muy segura que voy a hacer después de obtener mi licenciatura pero sé que tengo más tiempo para decidirlo y que hacer otra(s) pasantía(s) me pueden ayudar con esta decisión, y también hacer conexiones acá en Nueva York.
My name is Natalie, I am 24 years old and currently enrolled at BMCC as an international student. This is my fourth semester here. I live in Brooklyn but originally I come from Germany. I was born there and lived there for 20 years, with a two year break in between as I decided to go to the Unites States as an Au Pair (a nanny living with and working for a host family) after finishing high school. Traveling and working with children had always been my passion and so this was the best thing I could have done after graduating. It helped me grow so much as a person, I got to see many places, experience the American culture and make a ton of new friends from all over the world. Also, I was able to go to university and experience the American college life. Going back home to Germany after this two year experience was one of the hardest things I did so far in my life. I knew that I wanted to study at university as I had always enjoyed going to school and learning something new and so I started to study elementary school teaching, but I was not as happy anymore in my home country as before. Also, I felt that I did not want to get a career that is directly related to children, even though I still love children until today. I realized that I really like languages and that I want to make them part of my professional life. That is why I decided to go back to the U.S. to do my Bachelor’s degree here and again, I do not regret anything about this decision. I am now studying English-Spanish translation ad I am really enjoying my studies so far. Soon I will be transferring to a four-year college which I am very excited about. I am grateful that I also get to do an internship right now (especially because I also get the chance to include my native language German), as I was wishing to get some working experience as a translator. I am not quite sure yet what I will do after obtaining my Bachelor’s degree but I know that I still have some time and I am sure that I will be able to figure it out by doing another internship (or more) and making more connections here in New York City.
