“Steamboat Willie” is famous because it used fully synchronized sound. View the film again. How is the sound used to emphasize the action? Give some specific examples. What role does music play in the film? Does the use of sound reveal something about each of the characters? What does it reveal and how is sound used?

Prompt 2

View the clip of Snow White meeting the seven dwarfs again. Though each of the seven dwarfs are drawn and animated in a similar manner, there are important differences that tell us something about each of their personalities. Pick two of the dwarfs and show how they are distinguished from each other by the way they move, how they are drawn, their voices and any other means used to show their character.

Jennifer Uzhca W5 – Prompt 2

When watching the clip from Snow White, I see that each Dwarf has different movements and reactions to match their character. An example could be between Grumpy and Dopey. Grumpy always walk in an angry way, never really smiles, and has a rough voice when he speaks. Dopey on the other hand is a goofy character. He had his sleeves covering his hands which makes him look goofier. It is also explained that he doesn’t talk because he never tried, this really adds to the goofy character he has.

Raheem.Laing – W5- Prompt 1

Sound was a great way to emphasize every action in the film of Steamboat Willie. Each movement in the film had musical instrunment behind it to give the characters and their action more base. It was also to give the audience more of a sense whats going on in the film as well to entertain. There so that steamboat willie was the first animated film to synchronize music.

Journal Entry Week 5 Prompt 2 (Kelvin Cortez )

After watching the video of when Snow White meets the seven dwarfs what I noticed about them that makes them all similar are their animated features.  One being their big red noses but what sets them apart from each other is their personalities  and their body language two specific dwarfs that chose were Bashful & Grumpy. The characteristics as well as the body language that separates bashful from the rest is when his name is called  he responds in an almost dramatic oh  form as well he twists his beard around and his face turn bright red as one could say are qualities of being bashful or shy in a way. What sets Grumpy apart from the rest is when  the seven dwarfs peek their head over everyone else’s facial features are surprised but Grumpy facial expression is mad and not in a mood and even when he responds saying. “ How do you do what “ in a upset way with a sense of no patience and you can even see he crosses his arms as a form to assert his dominance of being upset and showing his mood through vocal and physical form.

Tyree McQueen W5: Prompt 1

In Walt Disney’s 1928 short film “Steamboat Willie,” sound is employed to emphasize the activities of the eponymous character Mickey by imbuing him with personality and enhancing the storyline itself. Songs used to enhance the story have always been a staple of Walt Disney Animations, particularly with their animated short series “Silly Symphony,” and just as those shorts flawlessly combined visual effects and music to define their characters’ emotions and dispositions, Steamboat Willie did the same with its unique narrative plot structured around an intriguing musical choice. Not only does the music in “Steamboat Willie” serve as one of the earliest sequenced cartoons to incorporate sound, but it also serves as an integral advancement within the animation industry.  There have been numerous animated shorts with synchronized sound and animation in the past, but what made “Steamboat Willie” so distinctive was the fervent and vivacious personality of the Mickeys’ character, with the music assisting in conveying his mischievous, fun-loving nature as he ventures through the uproarious world in which he is portrayed in. This is also true for all of the other supporting characters. The numerous diverse cadences and distinct melodies utilized to introduce new characters not only assist distinguish them from our eponymous character but also help them develop their own sense of identity. For instance, with Minnie’s introduction rushing to the boat, it’s a considerably higher-pitched rendering of Mickey’s introduction. It demonstrates that, despite the gender difference, she is an extension of Mickey herself,  not quite her own character yet, and appears to envy Mickey’s playful attitude, demonstrating their similar nature and special relationship.

After viewing the video of Snow White meets the seven dwarfs, you will see that they are all created and animated in a similar style, but they are distinguished by their personalities. I chose two dwarfs who were both sleepy and grumpy. To begin, Sleepy, when first introduced, yawns and stretches while appearing drowsy. Furthermore, his character has bigger eye bags as a result of his “lack of sleep,” making him appear physically exhausted in comparison to the other dwarfs. On the other hand, before Snow White even shouted his name, he crossed his arms with firm fists and took a deep breath, while crossing his with an angry expression. His brows are more clenched, and he has the largest nose compared to all the dwarfs.

Yusuf Aldacher W5 P2

After watching Snow White meeting the seven dwarfs, there were only two characters that stood out to me. The first dwarf Dopey, has a clumsy and sloppy characteristic amongst the seven dwarfs. His immaturity and deaf are what makes his characteristic stand out. The way Dopey is drawn is that his body is sloppy, his facial expression is silly, and his movements are very unpolished/sloppy when he moves. The second dwarf is Happy, the funny and jovial dwarf amongst the seven. He is energetic and cheerful traits is what makes his characteristic stand out. He has very quick movement and quick body language when he moves his arms around while talking. He also has a humorous voice and laughs.

In the film, the sound is used to emphasize the action from the beginning to the end because without a sound the film(clip) will a story different, sounds are very important in any video and film, sounds being feelings and emotion so the audience can feel the same way as in the film(movie). In the scene from the goat playing music, without the sounds, you won’t be able to know what music was Mickey and Minnie playing to the audience. Music plays a big role in the movie because if it is sad music you would feel upset if a happy one people would feel excited, without it, it can a challenge for the audience to react. Also in the goat scene, Minnie was playing something exciting so Mickey reacts to it with excitement and plays along with it, with more sounds.

Week 5 Prompt 1

Sound is used to emphasis the action that occurs during scenes in a film. This works well with animated films as the sound is able to set the ambiance of the scene that is being shown to the audience. By adding sound in the film Steamboat Willie, it allows for the characters as well as the audience to embark on a journey on the boat considering the film revolves around music. Each character played a specific tune which further emphasizes how they all had a meaningful role to be played throughout the film. This also allowed for the characters to be given an identity which is important for the story that the film proceeds to share.

Si Ming Moy W5

All of the dwarfs in Snow White are drawn very similarly from their round pudgy noses and drooping jowls to the style of clothing that they are wearing. They become more easily discernible when they start speaking or moving. Grumpy has a deep growly voice and is drawn mostly with a scowl on his face. He is seen folding his arms and reacts to something with irritation. Sleepy speaks slower than the other dwarfs and is drawn with half opened eyelids. He can be seen letting out a big yawn and being laid back.

Abdul Sami W5-Prompt 1

Steamboat Willie has been known for it being the first animation to have sound. Sound is mostly important in this short film because the characters play music in relationship to their actions for the significant part of this film. As Mickey the protagonist starts to play with his surroundings in the ship, he uses anything he can to make rhythmic sound to create the music. The instruments include not just the objects he finds but the animals boarded on the ship as well. Each of them makes a different sound meaning they all had a role here. Besides the music there is background sound for the other actions done by characters, the ship and the sound effects. Also, there was a bit of music playing already since the beginning of the film in the background to built up the picture of a comedic show.

Mariel Flores W5 P1

The sound and music in steamboat willy is used to emphasize action because it sets the tone of the scenes and the representation of the characters. The use of each sound reveals a bit of the characters personality by the way which the sound expresses them. For example when mickey starts using the animals as instruments, it shows his personality and how playful he is as a character.
