Prompt 1

Please tell us a bit about yourself. What is your name? Why did you pick this course? Is there a particular genre/era/type of animation you’re interested in learning more about? What is your major? What are your career goals? Include a few fun facts about yourself (hobbies? pets? favorite food?)

Prompt 2

Name an animated film or tv show that you like. Why do you think you like it?  Is it the characters, the animation techniques? Include this in the journal post. Research the studio/artist that created it as well as the date it was created and include this information in your post.

Deanna Vega W1

Prompt 1:

  • Hi there! My name is Deanna Vega, my major is animation and motion graphics. I picked this course because I thought it would be fun and that it fits my major. I don’t think I have a particular type of animation I’m more interested in. I hope that one day I get to work on my own personal projects as a sustainable career, or be in a studio/team I admire the values of. Besides that, I am a proud collector of 2 cats (Mochi Goliath Cinnamon Swirl and Onyx). I like to bake, digitally draw, and make jewelry.

Prompt 2:

  • I really like the shows Gravity Falls and Demon Slayer. For Gravity Falls I love the characters and story telling. It appealed to me as a tween and I still admire it for the creativity and heart it had. For Demon Slayer it’s basically the same but I also admire the animation and style choices.
    • Gravity Falls was aired in the summer of 2012 by Disney and then later Disney XD. The animation was 2D and they and would have used the program Toon Boom at the time (I’ve used that once in High School which I find cool).
    • Demon Slayer is an anime first aired in Spring 2019 but was a manga previously. The studio that made the show is Ufotable. The animation is 2D with 3D CGI backgrounds, which I think is done in a very balanced way and many of the scenes are just stunning.

Tyree McQueen W1: Repost

Hello, Professor and classmates of World History of Animation, my name is Tyree McQueen. I am a sophomore here at BMCC and this is my fourth and final semester, as I will be graduating this spring 2022. My current major is Animation and Motion graphics. Art and animation have truly been a passion for as long as I can remember and I am just so glad I have the opportunity to follow this career path and actually have an interest in what I am learning. When I think of an area of animation era of animation I would love to learn more about, I always think of the Golden Age of Animation, specifically the tropes and methods used by these animators during their earlier years. I have always been a fan of Max Fleisher and his style of animation, but i would love to learn more about how the animator utilized rotoscoping to create such realistic and fluid imagery. It must have been one interesting process.

I am involved in a couple of hobbies, each focusing on a different aspect of my personality that I aim to cultivate. To improve my artistic and creative skills, I joined a digital design community on Discord. Every Friday, we gather in a server to learn new skills in Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and even Procreate. This has allowed me to create more expressive art that I am proud of. I also attend Kickboxing every weekend from Friday through Sunday to increase my athletic and physical capabilities. This helps me maintain my productivity and output into the new week and relieves my stress from constantly doing schoolwork. When I think of an animated property that I truly like, the film that always comes to mind is Fantasia. I don’t if it was the aesthetically pleasing backgrounds, the visual gratifying practical effects combined with traditional 2d animation, the fluid imagery synchronized perfectly with the musical scores, or classic principles like squash & stretch being utilized within the wonderful dance sequences, but this movie truly knew how to push the limits of what animation could be going forward. Just an overall amazing spectacle to watch.

Natalia Ruzzi W1

Hi! My name is Natalia, I’m a VAT major in my last semester here at BMCC. I wanted to take this course because I’ve always loved animation even if I never necessarily wanted to be an animator. I really love claymation, like those old Christmas ones that come on every year, and especially Pingu. I think I want to work on writing in shows or just be an assistant on sets currently, but I am looking to transfer to New York City Tech in the fall for Technical Design. I love rodents and enjoy writing letter/collecting any sort of stationery. I’ve got a lot of stickers.

My current interests include going to the gym to keep myself healthy and doing eyelash extensions as a side hustle. :)))

Amina Toole – Journal Entry Week 1

My name is Amina Toole and my major is animation and motion graphics, I chose this course because im very interested in learning the history of animation and learning about animation from around the world that is unknown to me presently. My ultimate career goal and dream is to go to a school in france called les Gobelins, I want to go there for a masters in animation direction. I recognize that it will be very hard for me to get to this school at my current skill level, but I plan to work extremley hard to be at the quality level, of the work that emerges from Gobelins. Some of my hobbies include cooking, skateboarding, and listening to vinyl records. I also have a rescued black cat with one eye named Patoot, whom I love very much.  Some of my favorite animated films are from the 1960s to 90s, I really appriciate older experimental animation for its innovation and creative approaches.  One of my favorite animated movies is the yellow submarine released in 1968, it is a movie dedicated to the beetles albumn “The yellow submarine”. Another movie that I find very interesting is a French animated film called fantastic planet released in 1973. Its a relativley strange film, but I really appriciate it for its otherworldly asthetics and experimental funk music soundtrack.

Yusuf Aldacher W1

Hello everyone! My name is Yusuf Aldacher. I am a sophomore in BMCC and this is my last semester in which I’m soon going to be graduating in this Spring of 2022. I am majoring in Studio Arts. My career plan is to be a character designer or background designer for the gaming industry. My hobbies of mine are just drawing anything that includes modern military and medieval characters. The reason I chose this course is that I always admired how animation reached different levels throughout the years and always had a curiosity about how it all started. The animations of anime are what first inspired me to go for drawing. The Japanese animations of their “anime” cartoons were way ahead of their time or even more advanced than the Disney or western animations. I’m very interested in learning how did the Japanese make their animations so immersive.

Sangram Mathews W1

Prompt 1

Hi my name is Mathews. My major is Computer Science and I have a keen interest in all types of computer and media technology related areas. The first animated movie I watched when I was a kid was Monsters inc. and I was so fascinated by the animation effects of that movie because mainly I never watched 3D animated movie before that. I love video games and I’m very interested in game designing too. Although my main goal is to become a software engineer.

I usually like reading, watching news or playing COD. Recently I’m working on the Google IT automation with Python certification course. I work as a bartender for living. I have no pets as I’m always on the run but I wish I could have a cat. Anything my mom cooks are my favorite! Let’s have an insightful and fun learning experience

Jennifer Uzhca W1

One of my favorite animes that I’ve watched is Re-Zero. The studio for this is White Fox, the artist is Tappei Nagatsuki and the first season was released on April 4th, 2016. Re-Zero was originally a light novel that I haven’t read yet and look forward to reading in the future. I’m not a big fan of extremely gory anime, but this anime was too good to stop watching. It got darker as it approached season 2, but what I really liked about this anime was how it involves every character in the main plot. In many movies or series, we see how the side character always appears for a bit and then never makes an appearance again. In Re-Zero, every character has their own important contribution to the plot and one of the characters I appreciated seeing often was Otto and it took me by surprise to see how important he had become in the future episodes.

Journal Entry 1

Steven Universe

One of my favorite animated shows is Steven Universe because there is so much diversity in the characters and animated freedom. It was made by Rebecca Sugar and first came out on November 4th, 2013. It was produced by Cartoon Network who is also one of the goated studios in my eyes when it comes to animation. The graphics for this show were always so abstract and different. It was such unique Animation. As you can see in the picture, there are all different kinds of shapes and figures to represent the gems and people. The coloring of the animation for every character always had different splash of something to it. There was always diversity in the way they looked, acted, spoke, and lived. For Example, Garnet was a character that was a fusion of Ruby and Sapphire gems, and the way it was animated. I can’t put another picture here so I will put the link here instead https://images-wixmp-ed30a86b8c4ca887773594c2.wixmp.com/f/e5ca3930-8cae-41a7-ace8-db0f0161b62f/d979cg4-56e98c50-accc-472c-ae73-edc671bd1b51.png/v1/fill/w_777,h_1029,q_75,strp/steven_universe___garnet_05_by_theeyzmaster-d979cg4.png?token=eyJ0eXAiOiJKV1QiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJpc3MiOiJ1cm46YXBwOjdlMGQxODg5ODIyNjQzNzNhNWYwZDQxNWVhMGQyNmUwIiwic3ViIjoidXJuOmFwcDo3ZTBkMTg4OTgyMjY0MzczYTVmMGQ0MTVlYTBkMjZlMCIsImF1ZCI6WyJ1cm46c2VydmljZTppbWFnZS5vcGVyYXRpb25zIl0sIm9iaiI6W1t7InBhdGgiOiIvZi9lNWNhMzkzMC04Y2FlLTQxYTctYWNlOC1kYjBmMDE2MWI2MmYvZDk3OWNnNC01NmU5OGM1MC1hY2NjLTQ3MmMtYWU3My1lZGM2NzFiZDFiNTEucG5nIiwid2lkdGgiOiI8PTc3NyIsImhlaWdodCI6Ijw9MTAyOSJ9XV19.8eAvlCfJ3yeLZxlGw3hHCRmc0-xIktd1RacILcFYrK0 This link is long, but I liked the animation here because Garnet’s character was such a good mix of color and freedom of design. Steven Universe is Truly one of my favorite animated shows because it just showcases so much animation and CGI freedom! If you were to come up with a gem to create, it could most likely be in the show because that’s how much freedom there was.

An animated show that I really like is Jujutsu Kaisen. It has a good story, interesting characters and good action scenes. Their use of humor is well placed in an otherwise dark and serious theme. A litmus test that I like to use is if any of the main characters are killed off. If they do, you know that the stakes are real, otherwise the story kind of gets monotonous and mundane.

What also made the movie was how the story telling was made and made you relate and connect with other characters.Studio Ghibli also making different animated films that makes you want to create and do story telling.
