Steven Universe the movie

I will be doing my long paper on Steven Universe the movie! which came out in September 2nd, 2019! What’s draws me to this film is the 1) the storyline itself dealing with love, pain, trauma, realization, and change. 2) The characters that are introduced and reintroduced again in this movie and their dynamic/backstory is something that truly fascinates me! I love SU so much!

  • Background on when? where? who? what? and why? Steven Universe the movie was created?
  • The animation technique used to bring it to life?
  • The sound/music process for the film?
  • Any challenges they might have made while facing this?
  • What was the inspiration for the movie to be made?
  • Why steven universe means so much to me?

Prompt 2

This is one of the many Grub hub commercials that have come out and I think it tells a very simple story or has a simple message. That message is that Grub hub is the place for all your food needs. The colors in this animation are very bright and neon tone of color to it. The flow of the animation it’s self from the way they move to how they look is very smooth! I think this commercials works for the time we’re in now because, especially during covid, people couldn’t go outside to get anything to eat and sometimes to even shop for groceries. People couldn’t eat inside restaurants so this was a smart and eye catching tactic to let it be known, well if you can’t come to the food, we can bring the food to you. Even before covid and after covid, this is a good advertising for people that want to eat in and want certain foods, they know with commercials like this, they’re saying we got ya back!

Journal Entry Week 8 “The Hand”

I think the film was seen as subversive because it showcased the message of going against the communist governing of the Czech government. It showcased this artist who was just trying to live his life and perhaps didn’t agree with the communist ways of the Czech government and wanted to have some kind of control of his life. The hand was probably the representation of the Czech government and their actions. They didn’t want that giving them a bad name or exposing their true actions behind their communist ways. They wanted people to see their way of communism as good when in the video “The Hand”, it showed that it did things pretty forcibly and controlled people as if they were puppets with no mind of their own. The end resulting in the death showcased even more how horrible the Czech government was to their people and the serious oppression going on with the government rule.

Short Paper Outline-Steamboat Willie

  1. The film I’ll be doing for my short paper will be on Steamboat Willie.
  2. I’m drawn to the short film was because I remember watching Disney movies and seeing the iconic whistle animated scene in the beginning of the movie as the opener. I always enjoyed seeing it so now seeing that it has a full blown short animation to it, I want to do more research on it and study it.
  3. List:
  4. 1)When did the short film come out?
  5. 2)Who made the short film?
  6. 3)What year did the short film come out?
  7. 4)What animation elements were involved with making Steamboat Willie?
  8. 5) What historically was happening in society during that time?
  9. 6) What was the animation process like for this film?
  10. 7) What did the world of animation look like around the time of which the film came out?
  11. 8) What animation techniques or tools were involved in the making of this film?
  12. 9)What made “Steamboat Willie” such a special piece of work?

Journal Week 3 Prompt 1

Both McCay and Cohl’s animations use the art style of lining and they also have things morphing out of something. The different approaches are that while Cohl’s animation is more fast paced, McCay’s animation is slower because there is more detailed required when it comes to the animation. McCay’s animation is more complex than Cohl’s while Cohl’s is used with mostly shapes and angles to represent most of the characters physical features. McCay uses lines to keep the balance of the picture while Cohl uses the lines as a transition into something else. The background for Cohl’s isn’t used as much. Only to highlight the shapes that are morphing. McCay has a more detailed background that becomes consistent throughout the entire animation. It genuinely plays its part as background. While Cohl just draws his story out without any context words, McCay uses context words, narration, and detailed drawings to help showcase the story.

Journal Week 2

I can imagine being an audience member at one of Gaspard Robertson’s “Fantasmagorie” shows in 1797 because I’m a person who loves experiencing new things so I think it would be a nice experience to see what these Magic Lanterns are about. The emotion that would come out of me would be surprised and fear. Surprised because again I would be in awe at what I’m seeing but then the fear would come because I would be fearful at the demonistic beings I’m seeing being projected. I don’t mess with that stuff. I don’t want to allow that into my life, my space, or my mind. I don’t do it so I would definitely be fearful as well. An entertainment form that would bring up this same kind of emotions within me would be the cinema. Seeing a scary movie in theaters brings out the same emotion of shock and fear because it’s the adrenaline of fear a person gets when they get scared by a jump scare or some kind of “demonic being present” kind of scene. They’re different though because with the Magic Lanterns, you didn’t get a preview with what the movie would be about so the fear I would feel around the time of Magic Lanterns would be different than it is now, but the fear now a days is much more intense because animation and graphics are much more technically advanced then it was back then!

Journal Entry 1

Steven Universe

One of my favorite animated shows is Steven Universe because there is so much diversity in the characters and animated freedom. It was made by Rebecca Sugar and first came out on November 4th, 2013. It was produced by Cartoon Network who is also one of the goated studios in my eyes when it comes to animation. The graphics for this show were always so abstract and different. It was such unique Animation. As you can see in the picture, there are all different kinds of shapes and figures to represent the gems and people. The coloring of the animation for every character always had different splash of something to it. There was always diversity in the way they looked, acted, spoke, and lived. For Example, Garnet was a character that was a fusion of Ruby and Sapphire gems, and the way it was animated. I can’t put another picture here so I will put the link here instead https://images-wixmp-ed30a86b8c4ca887773594c2.wixmp.com/f/e5ca3930-8cae-41a7-ace8-db0f0161b62f/d979cg4-56e98c50-accc-472c-ae73-edc671bd1b51.png/v1/fill/w_777,h_1029,q_75,strp/steven_universe___garnet_05_by_theeyzmaster-d979cg4.png?token=eyJ0eXAiOiJKV1QiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJpc3MiOiJ1cm46YXBwOjdlMGQxODg5ODIyNjQzNzNhNWYwZDQxNWVhMGQyNmUwIiwic3ViIjoidXJuOmFwcDo3ZTBkMTg4OTgyMjY0MzczYTVmMGQ0MTVlYTBkMjZlMCIsImF1ZCI6WyJ1cm46c2VydmljZTppbWFnZS5vcGVyYXRpb25zIl0sIm9iaiI6W1t7InBhdGgiOiIvZi9lNWNhMzkzMC04Y2FlLTQxYTctYWNlOC1kYjBmMDE2MWI2MmYvZDk3OWNnNC01NmU5OGM1MC1hY2NjLTQ3MmMtYWU3My1lZGM2NzFiZDFiNTEucG5nIiwid2lkdGgiOiI8PTc3NyIsImhlaWdodCI6Ijw9MTAyOSJ9XV19.8eAvlCfJ3yeLZxlGw3hHCRmc0-xIktd1RacILcFYrK0 This link is long, but I liked the animation here because Garnet’s character was such a good mix of color and freedom of design. Steven Universe is Truly one of my favorite animated shows because it just showcases so much animation and CGI freedom! If you were to come up with a gem to create, it could most likely be in the show because that’s how much freedom there was.
