I definitely think that many of the early films were based on print comics because of the fanbase following. Print comics were popular icons that people were familiar with, also the comics were suitable for all ages and usually comical making it associated with positivity. In the past, I think animation was more difficult to produce so what would have been the point to produce something no one had interest in? Having people who knew about characters before hand (regardless of like or dislike to an extent) meant views and likely money. I feel this still is accurate towards anime and some other animations. I think many studios would prefer definite gain/profit rather than guessing whether the animation will make it. Not that there isn’t studios that like to try but I haven’t found something that didn’t or the author didn’t already have a fanbase.
At first I really struggled with thinking of anything else but shadow puppetry had me thinking about puppets in general. Then, Marionette puppets came to mind. Doing some research, I found out that those puppets have been around since 2000 BC, found in Egypt. From there they continued to be seen in many places as children’s toys or active puppets that play in some form of a theater. I feel like I’ve seen someone moving wooden marionette puppets on the sidewalk somewhere but it feels like a distant memory. these puppets mostly relates to shadow puppets in the amount of effort it takes. Both usually are done with one person and the puppets are made by hand or customized to be unique. Though Marionette puppets do take a 3D form and space unlike shadow puppets that play usually only in 2D, I feel like the story telling would be similar.
Hi there! My name is Deanna Vega, my major is animation and motion graphics. I picked this course because I thought it would be fun and that it fits my major. I don’t think I have a particular type of animation I’m more interested in. I hope that one day I get to work on my own personal projects as a sustainable career, or be in a studio/team I admire the values of. Besides that, I am a proud collector of 2 cats (Mochi Goliath Cinnamon Swirl and Onyx). I like to bake, digitally draw, and make jewelry.
Prompt 2:
I really like the shows Gravity Falls and Demon Slayer. For Gravity Falls I love the characters and story telling. It appealed to me as a tween and I still admire it for the creativity and heart it had. For Demon Slayer it’s basically the same but I also admire the animation and style choices.
Gravity Falls was aired in the summer of 2012 by Disney and then later Disney XD. The animation was 2D and they and would have used the program Toon Boom at the time (I’ve used that once in High School which I find cool).
Demon Slayer is an anime first aired in Spring 2019 but was a manga previously. The studio that made the show is Ufotable. The animation is 2D with 3D CGI backgrounds, which I think is done in a very balanced way and many of the scenes are just stunning.
