Aryanna Guaba-Short paper outline

“L’Idée” (“The Idea”) by Berthold Bartosch

This short film drew me in its use of sound. The electronic instrument mixed with the complex storyline. It also drew me in with its use of paper-like characters and the technique used in creating the piece. I also enjoyed the spread of drawings from the L’Idee.

I will discuss…

  1. The meaning of the film
  2. The way it was created
  3. The person who made the film
  4. How the film impacted time back then and now

Aryanna Guaba W3- Prompt 1

“Gertie the Dinosaur” and “Fantamasgorie” are in black & white with no sounds in their films. Both films also focus on characters, each being a groundbreaking experience in the animation industry. However the film “Gertie the Dinosaur” has a more smoother planned-out animation. Winsor McCay focuses on making Gertie come to life using only one background to tell Gertie’s story. The water is animated to show the river flowing giving more life to the scene. Not to mention the animation used to make Gertie move in different directions is impressive. In Emile Cohl’s “Fantamasgorie,” there’s a focus on multiple characters. It’s more simplistic and tends to be more abstract. There’s no background but theres objects in each scene such as tables or a pole light to show somewhat where the characters are located. Unlike “Gertie the Dinosaur” the “Fantamasgorie” has a very unclear story and less quality in animation having to rely on the characters visual actions and gags to spark interest.

Aryanna Guaba- Week 2 Prompt 3

Prompt 3

Can you imagine being an audience member at one of Gaspard Robertson’s “Fantasmagorie” shows in 1797? What do you think your reaction would have been?

Horror and gore are some of my favorite subjects, especially in the arts. There was no such thing as modern-day movies like the “Scream” franchise in 1797 so if I were an audience member during that time it would feel like an out-of-world experience. So I believe I would be one of Gaspard Robertson’s biggest fans regarding his “Fantasmagorie” shows. When it comes to bringing ghosts into a projection it increases the scare factor because it would feel as if they were really with you in the room. Not to mention the spooky aura from the candlelit room mixed with the glass harmonica would not only add to the experience but feel as if the show was a reality. The way he could bring the supernatural into the form of a real-life projection with him trying to mix as many elements to further improve his shows would impress and captivate me.
