The Joneses

1. Yes, how the Jones family lives can be categorized as a form of personal selling. Personal selling involves direct communication between a salesperson and potential customers to persuade them to purchase. While the Jones family’s approach differs from the traditional one-on-one interactions of personal selling, they use persuasive tactics to generate desire and influence consumer behavior.

The Jones family acts as influencers within their community through their fabricated lifestyle. They showcase desirable products, create a sense of aspiration, and indirectly encourage their neighbors to purchase them. By presenting an idealized lifestyle and influencing consumer preferences, they effectively engage in personal selling techniques, albeit more subtly and indirectly.

While personal selling typically involves direct communication, the Jones family’s actions can be categorized as a variation of personal selling, where they use their fabricated presence and influence to promote and sell products to their community.

2. One similarity between the sales tactics employed by the Jones family and the marketing tactics of some favorite brands is influencer marketing. Influencer marketing involves partnering with individuals with a large following and leveraging their influence to promote products or services. This is why the Jones family was focused on being popular and presenting themselves as the ideal family.

A specific brand example would be Daniel Wellington, a famous watch brand. Daniel Wellington collaborates with social media influencers who showcase their watches in their posts and stories, often accompanied by discount codes or special offers. The influencers present an aspirational lifestyle associated with the brand, creating a desire for consumers to own a Daniel Wellington watch and be part of that lifestyle.

Similarly, the Jones family used their fabricated lifestyle to influence and create desire among their neighbors. They presented an idealized version of life, showcasing desirable products and creating a sense of aspiration within the community.

Both the Jones family and brands like Daniel Wellington utilize the influence and reach of individuals to promote their products and create a sense of desirability among consumers. They tap into the power of social proof and personal recommendation to influence purchasing decisions.

3. Based on the course materials and general ethical principles in marketing, the way products are marketed in the movie “The Joneses” can be considered unethical. The film depicts the Jones family engaging in deceptive marketing tactics, posing as a genuine family while being a marketing team employed to promote products.

The Jones exploit the trust and relationships within the community by creating a fabricated lifestyle and showcasing products without disclosing their true motives. This lack of transparency and deception is inconsistent with ethical marketing practices emphasizing honesty, transparency, and respect for consumer autonomy.

Ethical marketing requires providing accurate and truthful information to consumers, allowing them to make informed decisions. The actions of the Jones family in the movie involve manipulation, misleading the community, and taking advantage of their trust for personal gain. Such practices go against the principles of ethical marketing and can have negative consequences for both consumers and the reputation of the company behind the marketing campaign.

Marketers need to prioritize ethical considerations, maintain transparency, and respect the rights and autonomy of consumers when promoting products and services.

4. If I were friends with someone in the Jones family before discovering their secret, I would likely feel mixed emotions after learning the truth. Initially, I might have admired their lifestyle and considered them close friends. However, upon discovering their deceptive marketing tactics and the extent of their manipulation, I would likely feel a sense of betrayal, disappointment, and a loss of trust.

Discovering that someone I considered a friend had intentionally deceived me and the community for personal gain would be deeply unsettling. It would challenge the authenticity of the relationship and raise questions about their true motives and intentions. The revelation of their secret would likely lead to a significant shift in my perception of them and could strain or sever the friendship.

The sense of betrayal and loss of trust would make it difficult to continue the friendship with the Jones family. It would be challenging to overlook their unethical behavior and maintain the same level of trust and closeness.

Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen Seeks Community Support for Pantry and Meal Service Donate today and Help Feed Someone In Need

New York, NY – Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, a leading non-profit organization that provides meals and support services to those in need, is seeking community support to continue its essential work. The organization is asking for donations to support its pantry and meal service, which provides food and assistance to those struggling to make ends meet.

For the last 38 years, The Soup Kitchen has never missed a meal service, even when there have been uproars in the community. The pandemic has caused unprecedented unemployment and food insecurity, leaving several individuals and families struggling for basic necessities. The Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen has seen a sharp increase in demand for its services, with the need to provide much more food than usual.

“Without the soup kitchen, I couldn’t afford to eat daily. There are people all around you that you’d never know were struggling to put meals on their tables, and places like Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen are an absolute necessity”, said John, Soup Kitchen Guest. Having served over 10,000,000 meals and counting to our community from all five boroughs, we are dedicated to continuing our service and pushing the needle further by asking for help from individuals that value the life of others.

The Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen is asking for donations of food, money, or time such as volunteering to support its pantry and meal service.

All donations are appreciated in the lives of those who are struggling. “If it weren’t for Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, I’d be on the streets now,” Jose, Soup Kitchen Guest. The donations pass through our hands to directly support the community and allow them to see a better day.

PlayMaysie

The pitch that resonates the most with me is the one for the portable children’s toy, PlayMaysie. This product resonated with me the most for multiple reasons, including the story behind the development of the product—the intended purpose of the product and the product itself.

The founder of PlayMaysie is a woman who had to face adversity in her personal life by getting divorced, moving out to live by herself for the first time, and figuring out the timing of her motherhood without a partner. She followed her heart and curiosity, leading to her adopting a baby girl. Later, she continued to pursue her interest by following up on her idea: a dollhouse in a suitcase, which would become PlayMaysie, the portable dollhouse. This product intentionally offered convenience in play on the go and gave back by allocating some of the proceeds to help foster care children. I liked the product itself because it was colorful, incorporated a theme, and looked like it would be fun to use for all children, such as my niece.

The product’s concept presented to the ‘sharks’ is a portable dollhouse that can be used indoors and outdoors by its design to create less mess for parents to clean up especially first-time moms who may be tired or busy with other parenting tasks. The magnetic feature of the pieces makes it possible to easily keep all the items together without losing them or creating a mess in the house. With the additional concept of a suitcase, this feature makes it an idea to take on the go. The toy will also stimulate children’s imagination and creativity.

The gap this product fills is the need for a portable and versatile playset that can be used in various settings. As mentioned by the founder when coming upon this idea, there was no dollhouse in a suitcase. There was no product with a feature such as a magnet to keep everything easily attachable. Many parents are looking for toys that are easy to transport and can keep their children entertained while on the go. First-time moms, or all parents, for that matter, want to be able to clean up the play area in their homes as fast and quietly as possible, so looking for new products that can provide that efficiency is always appreciated and wanted. PlayMaysiev makes the play process easier by providing children with a structured environment that stimulates their imagination and encourages creativity.

Consumers should want this product because it provides a fun and engaging way for children to stay occupied by playing with different scenarios. Various versions, such as a wild, kitchen, and bathroom theme, allowed children to be entertained and learn. The dolls were also gender-inclusive and diverse, enabling all children to be comfortable playing and learning with an open mindset. The portable aspect of the toys will relieve the burden on parents and make it fun for children to pick up and move from room to room.

To best position this product, it should be branded and packaged to emphasize its easy transportation and clean up as well as educational benefits and versatility, which it is currently doing. The packaging should clearly explain the different accessories in the playset, shown on the website and advertisement. The branding should highlight the portability of the toy, making it clear that it can be taken on the go and used in various settings, which is done by being in a lunch box/suitcase style with a band to be able to carry it around the shoulder. The founder’s story and the company’s purpose of giving back to foster children by providing them with their own PlayMaysie should also share to make that an additional reason people would want o buy this product. Overall, the product should be marketed to parents who are looking for a fun and educational toy that can keep their children entertained and engaged while on the go or at home while also helping other children in need.

Consumer Decision Making

I just moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. I am hungry and want to eat something to satisfy this need. Therefore, I decide to order Italian takeout. My need recognition step has been met.
Since I am new to this area and even in my usual process of finding takeout food, my first step is to use Google to search for places near me. Including the “near me” component is typical when ordering takeout because I do not want the food to have long transportation in the packaging. I then filter the search selection to show 4.5 stars and above to scan the restaurants with the high scores while also considering the number of reviews. While browsing the reviews, I look at the newest ones to check if there is a positive reputation and look for the bad reviews to see what are common issues, if any. I will then look at the menu and see if I have options as a pescatarian.
After selecting an option, I will look through the other choices to see if there might be something better while also considering the cost. I will compare reviews, location, food, and service through the comments on the web.
While doing this search, I was looking for an Italian spot with fish and vegan options because I was still deciding what I wanted. Since this would be a takeout item, I was not looking for a fancy restaurant because I would prepare to save that for a dine-in experience. I was looking for a casual spot, and the restaurant’s ambiance was not a priority; therefore, the food reviews were more critical. I was looking for delivery options because if it’s a takeout order, I would rather not have to pick it up, and it comes to me instead.
Two of the restaurants I was comparing ended up being Italian pizza places that also served entrees. The first was Stoneground Italian Kitchen, and the second was Settebello Pizzeria Napoletana. Both places had good reviews with 4.5 stars, and the food ratings were positive overall. There was pizza and different options that I sounded good a both. However, after looking at their website, I ultimately decided on Settebello Pizzeria Napoletana. While both websites were good, this one drew me in more, and the food looked great. As well as their about me section shared their detailed story and made me feel like I knew the restaurant more than the other one for some reason. Their brick oven made me want to try the pizza instead of having other total menu items at the Stonegorund Italian kitchen.

Ethics-TJmaxx

One retail store that I like shopping at is TJmaxx. If you have time to search through the many racks, you can find some quality clothes for a bargain. I know a few people who prefer something other than that store because clothes are out of season or they think it has cheap options, but this is not necessarily true. While shopping there, I have not considered their business practices or research why the items were low-cost. I went off TJmaxx marketing and assumed that the clothes were last-season over-stock things, and I thought I was making an ethical decision to shop there. However, the more I read while searching on their ethics and corporate social responsibility, I have some feelings towards the general business practice.

TJmaxx’s mission is to provide high value to its customers, associates, and community while benefiting the business and the environment. The company is a top off-price apparel and home fashion retailer worldwide. They operate in 9 countries with 4700 stores and have 340,000 associates. On Glassdoor, they have a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars, and 59% of employees would recommend working there. The company is a reputable, ethical business for an average customer due to its perceived optimism and caring about customer marketing.

TJmaxx has discount prices for known high and low-end brands. They can offer these low prices because they take advantage of opportunities to purchase from department store cancellations, over-manufactured products, or when a vendor wants to clear their merchandise at the end of the season. The other product source is the line of clothes they design and produce. They provide ethics codes for vendors and sourcing practices to ensure sustainability. However, there still can be issues. When the brands know they will become a seller to off-price retailers such as TJmaxx, they may tend to be less ethical with the planning of manufacturing products. For instance, they might decide to make more because it will be cheaper at a high quantity, and then if they don’t sell, they can still cover the cost by reselling to TJmaxx type retailer. Another issue is TJmaxx does not solely buy from ethical brands. They also have fast fashion lines for sale, including not environmentally friendly materials.

Tjmaxx does focus on creating a safe and beneficial workplace. They believe their associates bring their business to life and try to attract top-tier talent to work there. They care about inclusion and diversity by ensuring the recruitment process is not biased and, for instance, changing the language that might affect the ability to connect with diverse candidates—TJmaxx actively recruits from college campuses and offers internships and co-op programs that will benefit students. Current employees are offered career development with leadership conferences and courses designed to enhance their professionalism and skills. They also have a University that created a two-year program with one-on-one coaching to help employees be capable of succeeding in their current roles and progress in the next step of their careers. For well-being, Tjmaxx provides employees with vast resources on different techniques and support for personal issues and work-life balance. Tjmaxx has a high rating for its benefits package from current employees.

TJmaxx cares about giving back to the community, as stated in its mission. They provided donations to many organizations and even included their customers to get involved. In-store sells items that, when purchased, a little of the money goes to a fundraiser. Also, donations are suggested at checkout, which puts pressure on customers, but if more people are involved, there will be more to give back to communities.
Overall, Tjmaxx has a good reputation for corporate social responsibility. There can be improvements since they did have some ethical scandals, such as waste disposal and selling recalled items. Tjmaxx can strictly stand by its advertised practices to improve customer trust. Tjmaxx should know what they purchase and sell to the public regarding fur, recalled items, and environmentally friendly sources. While handling an ethical issue is better than not addressing it, avoiding the problem from the start by taking the time to research all purchases is best.

TJmaxx can improve its sourcing by not purchasing from fast fashion brands and slowing down its production of clothing lines to limit the excess products at the end of the season. TJmaxx can improve employee benefits by offering equity to the company in stocks or other means, which will help with wage issues and increase the morale and productivity of their workforce. I will still shop at Tjmaxx. However, I will thoroughly search the specific brand item to make sure it is an ethical brand before purchasing.
