Marketing has the ability to inspire us, to educate us, and to encourage us to do something. That call to action – the so what – of each campaign is different, and therefore each of us has one (or more) marketing campaign(s) that stick with us. Good marketing makes us feel something. It makes us want to be loyal to a brand, or to support a cause, or to explore something new. Marketing can get us on board with an idea, make us feel like we’re part of something bigger, or – in the words of Ted Lasso – for us to believe in something.

As marketers ourselves, there’s a lot to take away from the campaigns that we remember, even decades after they were new. The best marketers know how to craft memorable campaigns that have staying power, and that’s what we’re going to talk about in this module’s discussion.

For this discussion, we’re not looking for Reddit’s leaderboard of the “best marketing campaigns of all time.” Nope – for this, we want YOU to share what has resonated with YOU.

In your initial post, describe a brand whose marketing made their product or service appeal to you and why — especially if the manner in which it was marketed to you was unique or out of the ordinary. This could be a product or service you learned about while riding the subway, watching a YouTube ad, or seeing in a store window.  Add a photo of the product/ service / brand or even the marketing campaign collateral if you can find it, and explain why you may not have otherwise purchased / believed in / been loyal to / supported the product or service had it not been for the marketing. What want or need did this product or service satisfy?

Planet Fitness - Planet Fitness updated their cover photo.

A service that caught my attention one day while watching the T.v was a Planet Fitness commercial. I just gave birth and i was feeling unmotivated to loose the baby weight. Then they had a commercial of a sale 1$ down , 10$ billed Monthly. I was impressed because i did not want to add a extra bill unto my life but this deal was practical and reasonable. And the hours of operations made it even more convenient for my already hectic schedule. In the AD the company emphasized the Sale of 1$ down 10$ billed monthly and also the hours of operation including 24 hour service as well as free personal one on one training with a fitness expert.

I would have more than likely not have supported this establishment if it was not for the Advertisement on the T.V. The sale an perks of the membership information made me want to sign up. It was very useful.

I needed this service because i wanted to get back into shape. And also keep myself healthy and i was trying to find a affordable and easier alternative and i was happy to have seen the sale for the gym membership. working out at home sometimes is boring and a lot of other gym facilities are costly and closes at set times. So this was a great deal for me and i enjoyed the fact there was multiple locations with parking.

        Hi Nayamka,

Your feedback shows that companies can help and change people’s lives by focusing on solving real-world problems and needs. The fact that you found value in their service, not just because of the affordable cost but also because of the ease and facilities they provide, speaks volumes about their business approach.

        Hi Nanyamka,

Planet Fitness always has a way of getting me to purchase their membership over and over again! I think 10$ to have access to their array of equipment is a really good deal. A fit and healthy body is typically a goal of many people, so I’m sure Planet Fitness gains a lot because of their marketing.

Wow! That type of service should truly capture somebody’s attention, as they provide more than just a sale. I’m not sure when that occurred; otherwise, I might end up paying more than $10 without even having a personal trainer. I hope you achieved what you desired from the service, such as losing baby weight, getting in shape, and most importantly, improving your health. It was genuinely beneficial and enjoyable, just as you mentioned.

        Hi Nanyamka,

I completely understand where you’re coming from! It’s so important to find a gym that aligns with your needs and schedule. The Planet Fitness deal you mentioned sounds really enticing, especially the 24-hour service and the affordable monthly cost. I had a similar experience with finding the right gym that fits my preferences. I’m currently working out at Crunch, but the struggle to find the right fit was real. It’s great to know that Planet Fitness worked out well for you, and I might even consider checking it out myself. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I think you did a great job with this post and its definitely clearly something most of us can relate to. Planet Fitness is a very well-known gym and one of the cheapest as well to help people get started on their fitness journey. I can also agree that Planet Fitness has amazing marketing skills one of their yearly summer plans that made me consider joining them before coming out with this ad is their yearly free Planet Fitness pass which is made for teens and young adults which allows them to join one Planet Fitness free for the whole summer.

Their marketing is very catchy and pursuing. The fact that is actually $1 down and $10 a month sold me. I really like that they have numerous location that opens 24hr. I prefer to work out early in the morning where there is less people and more equipment available.

One memorable marketing campaign for me was Nike “Just do it” because it’s very encouraging and motivating . I noticed many people wearing sweaters and shirts that have the campaign on it whenever I go to the gym , I started wearing Nike as well because whenever I felt like giving up or didn’t want to work out, the words “Just do it” were motivating and it made me feel connected with the brand. This brand has impacted people who want to lose weight or gain strength , or even quitting a job.

I would’ve not known about the brand if I didn’t see people wear Nike in the gym.

I needed this service because this brand is encouraging me to strive and keep on doing what I have to do to maintain in healthy mindset and body.

Honestly, I didn’t fully understood the significance of “just do it” until I reached the end of my reading. Then it struck me that it’s quite motivating. Your story reminded me of one of my friends’ experiences. Whenever we were about to play soccer, he’d a shirt with the words “do not give up.” One day, he shared with me, “Listen, my friend, whenever I’m about to quit and I see those words on my shirt, I push through even if I’m exhausted.”
That’s incredibly inspiring; wear it wherever you have to face a challenge.

Great post! I really loved hearing about how inspiring Nike “JUST DO IT” is to you. I’ve always enjoyed purchasing from the brand since they have many different styled clothing and shoes with nice quality. I honestly love how such a simple phrase doesn’t have to mean much to someone like me but can mean a whole lot to someone like you. I love how you look at the brand for that motivation and that push to do the things that sometimes you may just not want to do. I encourage you to keep on going even on those days or at those moments you just want to give up and to continue to “JUST DO IT”.

A brand whose marketing made me appeal to their product was EA Sports. EA Sports marketing of their video games made them appeal to me because they called it “the Worlds Game”. Their YouTube ads of FIFA and Madden sports games caught my attention because soccer and American football are my two favorite sports to watch and play. I definitely wouldn’t have purchased these items if it wasn’t for their marketing because the ads on YouTube made me watch streamer who live stream gameplay. And it made it competitive to me and i like competition. The want to product satisfy was having something to do during my free time.

I definitely agree with you on how EA sports marketed its FIFA games, because I used to be very fond of fifa games. The way EA sports used to advertise the game was very captivating. I first ran into fifa when my cousin was playing it in his ps2, and when the game started, I was fascinated by the intro of EA sports and the walkthrough of the game. I decided to buy the game myself and give it a try.

Wall Street Heavyweights Set to Bag Lucrative Listing of Airbnb

One brand that left a lasting impact on me is Airbnb. Their marketing approach caught my attention due to their ability to connect with the traveler within me. Their campaigns weren’t just about booking accommodations; they were about embracing local experiences and fostering a sense of belonging, no matter where you were in the world.

Airbnb’s marketing campaigns often showcased real stories of travelers and hosts, sharing personal connections and cultural exchanges. This approach was unique because it didn’t just focus on the accommodations themselves; it highlighted the shared experiences and connections that could be made through travel.

The marketing tapped into my desire for authentic travel experiences. The stories of staying in a cozy cottage in a remote village, or sharing a meal with a local family, resonated with my curiosity to explore and connect with new cultures. The emotional aspect of their marketing, combined with the variety of unique stay options, made me feel like I wasn’t just booking a place to sleep, but an opportunity to create memories.

Without Airbnb’s marketing approach, I might have stuck with traditional hotels and missed out on the enriching experiences that come with staying in unique and local accommodations. Their campaigns made me believe that travel wasn’t just about checking off tourist spots; it was about connecting with people and places in meaningful ways.

I absolutely agree with your post. Airbnb allows you to experience the destination in a more “informal” way. You’re able to stay in someone else’s home, essentially, and experience things that are important to them. It also allows you to have a more “at-home” experience, since a lot of Airbnb’s feature fully equipped kitchens.

I’ll admit — it took a while for me to come around on Airbnb — staying in someone else’s home? It seemed weird at first. Now, I do it all the time. I only stay in hotels when they are cheaper than local Airbnbs, or if I can’t find an available Airbnb in the place I’m traveling to.

My attention was caught by an ad for a 21-day lash-lengthening and strengthening eyelash serum as I scrolled through my Instagram feed. In the video, a beautiful woman with bright eyes was shown with her face close to the camera to show how the serum improved her eyelashes.
I connected with the ads because of the location. The girl’s house was the film’s setting, documenting her regular skincare routine while subtly showcasing the product. This scene reminded me a lot of how I take care of my face daily, making the ad very real. The brand highlighted an approach to personal appearance that is honest and approachable.
However, this advertisement did not appear on my feed at random. I had been looking for beauty products the previous week to help me grow longer, thicker eyelashes. With complex algorithms, modern advertising can cater to each individual’s preferences. Over a week, I was not only convinced of the ad’s persuasive images’ ability to sell the product but also an emotional investment in it. It filled a gap in my skincare routine.

The serum was more than a product. It exemplifies how clever advertising can make buyers feel they matter. Marketing has the potential to strike resonate with consumers on a deeply personal level, whether through challenging conventional beauty standards or presenting genuine daily routines.

Oh, I see you’ve fallen victim to the “magical” algorithms too. It’s like they know us better than we know ourselves. That ad must have felt like a personal whisper from the beauty cosmos.

It’s impressive how ads can hit home when they align with recent searches. The relatable setting and authentic approach make a big impact. Your point about the serum being more than a product is so true marketing today can really connect with us on a personal level. Great thoughts Rotem!

        Hi Rotem!

I always find it so fascinating on how ads (especially on instagram) cater to our wants so easily. There have been times where i might be discussing getting a certain product with my friends, and next thing I know as i’m scrolling through instagram, bam! There’s a version of the exact product that I want. Now I am really curious about the lash-lengthening product you are talking about! I feel like, making the ad feel more personal (a woman going over her skincare routine, rather than the ad directly focusing on the lash product) is a great marketing strategy.

A brand whose shopping made me like their product more was Fortnite. Fortnite marketing of their video games appeals to me because they made a ”battles pass”. With the battle pass you could unlock a lot of skins and V-bucks when you keep playing the game, also the more levels you climb the more things you would open. I definitely wouldn’t have purchased the battle pass if it wasn’t for their marketing cause it makes people outside the battle pass feel left out. And it made it more fun for me and I like to have fun. Fortnite, want people to get the battle pass so they could be more engaged in the game.

A game I am shamelessly loyal to is the Sims 4, created by EA Games. I have been playing the Sims since I was about twelve years old; I have seen the development of all of the games, up until the current fourth one. In Sims 4, they have many expansion packs that essentially expand what you can do in the game. They add clothing, seasons, items, “moodlets”, tasks, you name it! They also have game packs. These are smaller compared to the expansion packs. Every time I log into to the game, I end up purchasing either a new expansion pack or game pack. EA has an incredible marketing strategy because I always feel like I need the new development to enhance my gaming experience. The most recent one that captured my attention is the ‘Growing Together’ expansion pack. In the Sims, when a family has a baby, the game doesn’t allow interaction with the baby other than the basic feedings, diaper changes, etc. The baby stays in the bassinet until they age up to a toddler. In this expansion pack, they developed a profile and game interaction for the the infants! Super exciting for someone like me who always wanted that to be featured in the game.

If it wasn’t for EA’s marketing, I probably wouldn’t have as many game enhancements as I currently do. I’d play the base game as is because I wouldn’t see a need for any new packs, or care for them. The need that this new expansion pack satisfied was making my game more enjoyable and fun to play because of the new developments that came with the Growing Together expansion pack.

I also found the ‘Growing Together’ expansion pack intriguing being able to interact with infants adds a new layer of realism to the game. It’s like they know exactly what we’re looking for to enhance our gaming experience. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

I’m so happy to see someone is also a Sims 4 lover. I hear there’s a Sims 5 coming out soon as well. The Growing Together pack was super tempting. I also think that it was a great marketing plot because, instead of simply giving the items offered in a game update they recognized a chance to charge people for what they want. In addition, when it was released they gave the base game a small portion of what could be in store for them if they were to purchase it.

Thank you for bringing up EA sport’s ‘The Sims’ game. Since I was very fond of the sims game myself when I was a little kid, I can agree with you on EA sports marketing strategy of the sims. The sims was created as a virtual simulation of a real-world family/household life where one can control and lead a player from making a house to running their own family. And this simulative gaming strategy of EA sports attracted me into buying their sims game.

Apple was the brand that first came to my mind when I thought of a brand that had created a new product that appealed to me from the way it was marketed. Apple’s new iPad (10th generation) caught my attention because I was looking to get an iPad or a new laptop for school, my businesses, and content creation. However, instead of getting a new laptop, I decided to purchase an iPad instead. Apple’s 10th generation iPad caught my attention more than their MacBook’s because it is cheaper than all of their iPads and MacBook’s, more lightweight and easier to carry and they were able to finally make bright new beautiful colors (blue, pink, yellow, and silver). Apple’s new iPad was not only in beautiful colors, lightweight, and cheaper but it is also able to help me out with being a college student since I am able to write on it with a pencil like it’s a book, and I am also able to use it more since I am a business owner. Also, it helps me with my editing skills, and I can use it for content creation. Apple marketed its new iPad on billboards, commercials, and other ads. However, customers who promoted the product on Tik Tok also made the new iPad very famous and had creators showing you several different ways how you can put the new iPad to good use which is one reason why I bought it. Another reason is because after speaking to my cousin who also bought it and is a content creator and business owner, she explained how much of a good investment it will be. I chose to buy this iPad instead of the other models I was considering because there wasn’t much of a difference as the workers at Apple and some content creators made it seem. It is very easy to use, especially since I will be using the iPad to download other apps to help me with what I need such as Goodnotes to help me stay organized or write my notes on a digital notebook for class and CapCut to help me edit my videos.

Given my English learning background focused on grammar, syntax, and reading, I’ve put limited effort into developing my listening and speaking skills. As a result, I regularly watch English learning channels to enhance my language abilities. Lingoda’s marketing strategy strongly appeals to me. The pricing is more favorable compared to other language learning platforms, and there’s currently a “50% cash back” initiative. This means that if you attend every class in a term, you can receive 50% of the course fees back. While this requires purchasing a monthly course upfront, the average cost per class is around seven US dollars. This is truly enticing, and the prospect of 50% cash back motivates me to stay committed. I encountered Lingoda through influencer marketing, discovering the platform and its offer through recommendations from my favorite English-related Youtubers. Without this marketing, I might not even be aware of the brand’s existence. Even if I did, I’d struggle to trust their services. However, endorsements from influential bloggers with a strong following and many likes indicate the brand’s usefulness, allowing me to use it with confidence.

Hi professor, this is a good question. But I feel that if he uses the discounted course as a marketing strategy, it might not be as appealing to me. It’s like I’d prefer to buy something for $9.99 rather than $20. They certainly have captured the psychology of me as a consumer.

Imagine yourself strolling down a busy street when you come across a storefront that has an enchanting display of Copic markers from ChromaBlend Creations. The markers radiate a vibrant allure as they are arranged in an attractive gradient pattern. This marketing campaign stands out for the way it places a special emphasis on the artistic potential of these markers. The exhibit showcases intricately detailed artwork that demonstrates the markers’ capacity to produce lifelike shading and seamless blending. It is more than just a product showcase. The slogan of the accompanying banner, “Unleash Your Imagination with ChromaBlend Creations,” perfectly captures the spirit of the advertising campaign. Copic markers were on your radar before this encounter, but they weren’t at the top of your list of artistic priorities. But this unusual exhibit, which resembles a tiny art gallery, immediately changes your viewpoint. Your desire for high-quality tools and your desire to express yourself creatively are directly reflected in the display’s intricate artwork and the markers’ potential to improve your own artwork. The emotional bond created by this cutting-edge marketing strategy not only piques your interest in the markers right away but also creates a solid foundation for future loyalty to ChromaBlend Creations’ artistic offerings.

Moving to America, one of the biggest countries in the world with a different weather compared to my country. Further, the brand that caught my attention was Irish Spring. In my first 5 months, I struggled to find the real soap for my body until I luckily fell on that Irish spring ad while I was watching the news on YouTube. Moreover, it showed how natural(olive oil) it was made, how it could cure spots on the body, and finally, how good it was for people with dark skin. For me, the main goal of the ad was to help people who were going through tresses regarding the button on their face or spots on their skin and let them know that everyone could be beautiful in their own way.

Without those caractéristiques, I wouldn’t be interested in buying it for my body because every time I bought soap, they told me something like “it could make a body shine or brilliant, etc” which one ended up making my face what I did not ask for.

In short, Irish Spring met my needs and made me feel good in my body. On top of that, It also made me feel like I was part of the ad that wanted to change people’s view of beauty.

I find it cool that you had an amazing experience with Irish Spring. I also didn’t know that it had any benefits besides keeping peoples bodies clean. Besides keeping people clean, and their skin looking great, I hear that isn’t great for rodent prevention.

What want or need did this product or service satisfy?

      Sims Update

With each year in my life I get to enjoy so many things that are offered to me electronically. Ever since I was younger I enjoyed playing The Sims and I still do as an adult. The company has an assortment of games offered and they’re for all ages. Recently, they have updated their game The Sims 4 and offered a long line of additional products within the game. Some of these things include house improvements, brand new outfits, and a ranch (or farm) expansion pack. That expansion pack offers more that a new adventure for people interested in the product. Originally, I wouldn’t have thought of purchasing it until I watched videos of other sims in action using things from the pack I the became interested. Seeing an example of other sims in motion gave me a chance to put my sims in an imaginary storyline. There are also some things in the demo video mentioned that wasn’t mentioned in the item list or shown in the pictures. This only made me want to purchase even more. I feel like this product can be seen as a need for horse lovers that play sims, but for me I believe it is a want simply because it is a game option.

Hi Rasheeda! I absolutelty love the sims! I think what makes the Sims so unique is that it’s a game of life and there are so many components in the game that are similar to real life you can’t help but love playing it. It also allows for your imagination to run wild in building houses or creating sims. It even has some fantasy components like aliens, vampires, and mermaids! All the expansion pack, game packs, stuff packs, and kits just adds to the game even more which allows players to broaden their sims worlds and lives even more. Overall a fantastic game!

A brand that I became interested in recently is Truly Beauty. It a type of skin care brand that can be found at Ulta but they also have their own website online as well. The marketing done for their products are just so vibrant and colorful that it caught my attention right away. The product that specifically caught my eye that made me research them a little more was their Barbie collection that came out this summer due to the Barbie movie rave. I absolutely loved the packaging and the coloring and the products that came with the bundle and decided to buy it. When it finally arrived to me, it was even prettier in person and also smelled really good. And the results from using it were effective and instant, I was really shocked so I ended up getting more of their products and now I use them as my whole skin care mostly. If it wasn’t for their unique packaging and the unique way the products looked (Ex. their butters look like ice cream and come in many vibrant colors) I most likely woulodn’t have looked at it twice. i think their way of adding vibrant colors to their products is what makes them unique and makes their products fun to use.

A product that caught my attention when i was searching to buy a bicycle online was the VIVI E-BIKE. The way the product was marketed online through their own website made me feel like the product was genuine. Unlike many other online sites and physical bike stores, the specifications given on the vivi website were very descriptive and clear, and also were the ones that I needed to be informed of. I would have had a much harder time figuring out the bike of my choice had it not been without VIVI and their marketing strategy online. The e-bike has been a fast and convenient way for me to travel around NYC to complete my day-to-day tasks.

HONEY POT FEMININE CARE was the brand whose marketing appealed to me. Simply because I only wanted to use natural/organic animal cruelty products that will not harm my body in the long run or cause irritation/infection. I have sensitive skin and was looking for something suitable for my female organ. I saw the advertisement for this product one day while watching television. The founder immediately sold me because she was a WOMAN who came up with a safe and natural ingredients that are designed to keep you feeling fresh and comfortable. I went to Target to buy HONEY POT and after reading more about it and seeing it in person, I was much more convinced. I would not have bought this brand if I hadn’t seen this marketing piece. I was drawn in by the catchy name as well. The packaging is vibrant and inviting. I’m all in for a really great product that makes you feel comfortable. I’ve been using HONEY POT for the past four years and won’t be switching. I have nothing negative to say about it; my main satisfaction is that it is plant-based, natural, fresh, and safe to use.

Being a resident of East Hampton New York, there happens to be a Starbucks near where I have been going to enjoy a iced coffee or cappuccino and I have been a member ever since for their commitment and great service. When entering the store I feel a vibrant environment where everyone is welcome and can enjoy a cup, and it’s here where they catch their customers from ads, tv, internet searching or from the smell of their coffee, furthermore it’s help them successed in capturing consumers and it’s all from the company’s marketing campaign strategy. Being a full time customer everyday is my commitment to this well establishment, to add on it’s a brand that wants their customers to know their product is worth buying from coffee cup supplies to ingredients and it’s worth mentioning the service thats provided as well. Overall the satisfying establishment holds up to it’s ethics to make sure their services are known in order to satisfy customers like me who completely support them.
