Good afternoon!
My question is how do we know when the assignments are due? How do we know when an assignment is posted? I’m asking this because I’m so used to blackboard and whenever something is posted it sends a notification to my phone. I’m just wondering do we just go by week to week, for example week 8/26 to week 9/2? Sorry if it’s confusing I’m just trying to get the hang of things!
Hi Thahina,
Thanks for your question. Don’t apologize if you’re a little confused at first. I know that every class is different. Our class week begins on Monday (except Week 1 is short and begins on Wednesday 8/26). The work for each week must be completed by Sunday night at the end of that week. For example, in Week 2, the work must be completed by Sunday, September 6.
For essays, the due dates are posted with the assignment and also in COURSE INFORMATION under “Essay Due Dates and Submission Links.” Quiz due dates are also posted and always close on Sunday night. For example, Quiz 1 will close at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 30. For discussion boards, please read “Information about Discussion Boards” in COURSE INFORMATION. To receive full credit, students must post by Friday of each week.
Hello Professor Conway. Are we technically in week 1? If so, our discussion board original post should be submitted by this Friday? Thank you.
Hi Richard, welcome to the class! I think you and Thahina are asking a similar question that is probably confusing others, as well. Normally, the week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday. In Week 1, however, the week is shorter and began on Wednesday. So the Week 1 discussion will be open until Sunday, August 30th, but in order to receive full credit, students must post by Friday. Be sure to read “Information about Discussion Boards” in COURSE INFORMATION.
So in other words – yes, Week 1 is shorter (Wed-Sun) but we still needed to post to the DB by the Friday (the 28th)?
David, that’s right.
I left my first comment of the discussion board and I didn’t realize how screwy it all would come out after copy pasting! is there a way to delete my first post? I posted it a second time with better spacing. thanks!
Hi James, I sent you an email about this.
Good evening!
I am having trouble finding my section number for the DB. Is it shown on Open Labs?
David, you should see your section number on your schedule. If you go to Blackboard, you should see your courses listed. You are in either ENG 201 Section 0503, 0504, or 0534.
Thank you professor! I just replied to my posting with my section number.
Hello professor,
I’m recently getting the hang of things for OpenLab. As I’m reading through the activities of week 2, I can’t seem to find the quizzes. I checked earlier than 5pm just in case I missed anything but I’m just now seeing there was in fact a quiz. All I see is the “Link to Quizzes”, the actual “Quizzes” folder, but all that comes up is “There is no content to display.” I checked last week thinking we were using Blackboard for the quizzes but nothing has come up for me. I was wondering if there was an issue with blackboard itself or is there something wrong with the link? I don’t want to keep missing anything.
Thank you.
Hello Professor,
I am trying to access the interactive reading of “Araby” on the Commonlit website. When I click the link, an error message pops up saying “Assignment is no longer available”. Can you tell me if I am doing something wrong?
Thank You
Faith
Please disregard! I’ve located the story in the library section of commonlit. Thank you
Faith, thanks for the followup. I’m so glad you found the story. We’ll be using CommonLit a lot during the course.
Faith, I have to apologize to you! I had not changed the CommonLit link from my last course. This is why you couldn’t access it. Thank you for your resourcefulness in locating it on your own!
Hi Professor Conway,
I have a question about the quizzes. Is there a way to see the correct answer for a missed question? I was able to see which one I missed and the options, but wasn’t able to determine the correct answer. Thank you!
Best,
Ashley
Hi Lauren, this is a great question. Let me see if I can make this happen. I actually didn’t realize you couldn’t see the correct answer. On my end, I see the incorrect and correct answer.
Hey Professor,
When looking at weekend 4 I noticed that the story “A Rose For Emily” doesn’t appear in the commonlit site. The only story I can access is “Araby” which we have already read. Could we read this weeks story from a different source ?
– Section 0504.
Hi David, the start date for the story to become available is 9/14. I looks like you tried yesterday (which is fine).
It should be available now, however. But to answer your question, using a different source is fine when you’re having problems, as long as the work of literature is not a translation. With translations, there are often significant differences between various texts of the same story.
Hi Professor Conway,
I hope you are well. I clicked the link for the production of Oedipus the King (Activity 3 ) and youtube says it is no longer available due to a copyright issue. Could you recommend some keywords to search to see if I could find it elsewhere? Would be so curious to see!
Thanks,
Ashley

Lauren, unfortunately, in order to view this film now, it must be rented. This is a shame for us; however, I can understand the film company’s rights to its intellectual property.

Hey Professor, I just looked through week 08 and saw that quiz/midterm is coming up. It says that the test will be available from 9:00 Monday, March 30 until 5:00 Sunday, April 5. I just wanted to clarify the dates for this exam.
Thank you,
David [0504]
Hi Professor Conway, I am not sure how to submit my essay. We did the first part on turn-it-in.
Hi Syndoll, if you are referring to the essay due October 25th, please go to Blackboard. Click “Essay Submission Links” and select Essay 2. This will also go through the Turnitin feature. These directions are also in Openlab with the essay assignment.
Syndoll, you’re right that directions were not given for submission. I’ve added them to the Activity in Week 7. All essays will be submitted in this fashion.
Hello Professor Conway
As the final exam approaches, I would like to know if we have to write an essay for the final exam besides the multiples choice questions??
(If we have to write an essay for the final exam can you give us an idea about it )
Thankyou
Hi Miguel. No, you do not have to write an essay for the final “exam,” which is a “quiz” like all the others you have taken during the semester.
