Welcome to Week 3 of our online course (Zoom meetings Mon., April 13 and Wed, April 15) . This week we will be exploring the denotative and connotative meaning of words and reading a variety of articles that define abstract concepts, such as manhood and the meaning of the Fourth of July to enslaved people. (Frederick Douglass). This is in preparation for your second essay, which will be an extended definition. Don’t worry if this sounds unfamiliar to you. It will all become clear in class.
Be sure to take Quiz 3 on essay structure. by midnight Sunday, April 19.

Activity 8: Mini-lesson on Capitalization
Activity 9: Introduction to Extended Definition
Read “To the Slave, What is the Fourth of July?” by Frederick Douglass.
Brainstorm on topics for Extended Definition essay. Bring to class on Monday at least 5 possible topics. Try to avoid topics that have been written about frequently.
Note: The deadline for submission of Class Writing 2 (HW) was Monday, March 30th.
