At the end of the semester you will develop a Self-Assessment of what you have learned which will help to determine your grade for ECE 209. In preparation for your Self-Assessment, answer the questions below; you will answer these questions at the end of each module so you have a record of what you have learned over the semester. You can answer the questions here on Open Lab or create a journal on Blackboard (which would be private).
- What did you learn in the modules for ECE 209-Lecture and Seminar?
- Information/ knowledge
- Skills
- Insights (connections you made or “ah-ha’s” you had about the material)
- How will the material from these module better prepare you to work with infants?
This Module 10 I learned about Language development in more depth, after watching the video, something that caught my attention was that language begins before birth. In the Ted Talk I watched, the expert mentioned that in order for a child to understand a new language when they are babies, they need an adult in front of them talking to them in a different language, expose babies to videos or audios doesn’t work. It takes a human being for babies to take their statistics. I learned about three theories: Nativist (children are born with the ability to learn language. Learning ( children acquire language through reinforcement and Interactionists (children learn through social interactions. I also learned about the milestones of a 1 year old. Finally, in the seminar I had the opportunity to get to know in more details about the importance of partnerships as well as family engagement.
What I learned in this module is that in order for babies to learn a new language when they are born they need somebody to speak to them no stop and they’ll be able to understand but when they get older and they try to learn a new language it will be more difficult for them to learn it.
What I learned in this module is that babies need A lot of communication so they can learn more. Do a lot of activities that can be beneficial for the infants.
In this module I learned a lot about language development after watching all the vides but I also learned more on communication with families and baby’s and most importantly partnerships with families.
I reviewed this activity
In this module I learned language development and what are the things I can do as a future teacher to to support baby’s language development such as read books, speak to them directly, explain to them what is going to happen, and create a rich environment to support them.
I learned that babies communicate in many different ways . I also leaned that everything they do has a meaning.
I reviewed this activity 5/8
In this module, I learned about the importance of engaging families in the infant’s learning program. I learned that children integrate what they are learning at home into the classroom. I also learned that the infant teacher should partner with the parent and learn what their practices and routines are like.
I was surprised and had an “A-ha” moment when watching the videos and through the readings I learned that babies pick up language skills at an incredibly early age. That they show cues of understanding and picking up verbal skills of a language before 6 months of age.
