Unit 1 Assignment

For our Unit 1 Assignment, we will reflect on the Equal Rights legislation we learned about in our readings and lecture, and the story of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s work to eliminate discrimination in the film On The Basis of Sex. Especially in light of the ongoing social justice movements across the country, this topic — overcoming adversity and bringing more perspectives into the conversation — is applicable to all of our lives, and to those we surround ourselves with.

For this assignment, students can choose their medium to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the content of this unit and a meaningful application of the key concepts into their own lives.

Students can choose to:

  • Write a 1-2 page reflection that addresses how Equal Rights legislation in the US has affected them personally, and how Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s work continues to pave the way for equality and justice in the US. Here is an example of a student’s submission from a prior semester.
    .
  • Submit an image of an art piece they create (this should be your OWN work, not something created by someone else) to convey the impact of equal rights legislation in their life and the lives of those close to them. This can be a poem, painting, song — any form of art that can be shared and explained. Please refrain from using potentially harmful or offensive language or imagery.
    .
  • Interview a friend or family member (or multiple people) who lived through the passing of certain Equal Rights legislation and has a story to tell about how that legislation affected them personally. This can be recorded on video, or transcribed with questions and answers.

For any of the options above, students should follow this guide to create a post and select “Equal Rights” as the Category. All submissions will populate under the Student Work menu item (Student Work > Equal Rights). Students should review others’ submissions and comment meaningfully (refer to this guide from MMSU for reference) to at least two other students. For reference, here is the difference between a comment and a post — you will be using both for this assignment.

[When selecting a category, be sure to select a regular Category, NOT a Category Sticky. If you do this incorrectly, you will not see your post in the Student Work > Equal Rights section. See the image below for more information.]
