Company culture and organizational ethics are two common concepts that are imperative to the longevity and overall success of a company. Though often intertwined with one another, company culture and organizational ethics are two distinctly different things that form the foundation on how your company progresses throughout the years.

Company culture refers to the shared values, beliefs, and behaviors that define the way people within an organization interact with each other and approach their work. It encompasses the company’s mission, vision, and core principles, shaping the overall work environment and influencing employee attitudes and actions. A positive company culture fosters collaboration, innovation, and employee engagement, contributing to a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Organizational ethics, on the other hand, pertains to the moral principles and values that guide the behavior of individuals and groups within the company. It involves making decisions and conducting business in a manner that is ethically sound and aligned with societal expectations. Strong organizational ethics promote integrity, transparency, and responsible business practices. Together, company culture and organizational ethics create a foundation for a healthy and sustainable work environment, encouraging employees to uphold high standards of conduct and contributing to the overall success and reputation of the organization.

What are business ethics and why are they important to an organization ?

Well let’s first start off by defining what ethics are. Ethics are the basic moral ground rules by which we guide our lives by. It has to do with our conscience, a sort of self awareness or instinct that tells us what is right or wrong. A situation when good or bad ethics are being utilized within a company  is usually known as an “Ethical Dilemma”. Ethical dilemmas that arise create opportunities to test your “Ethical Decision Making Skills”. With that being stated we must prepare for an ethical dilemma and answer them with ethical decision making skills.

What are some ethical dilemmas that can arise ? Let’s break down what an ethical dilemma is. An ethical dilemma are issues of conscience coming from outside your sphere of influence. Imagine a scenario where a manager discovers that a colleague is engaged in fraudulent activities to meet sales targets. The ethical dilemma arises as the manager must decide whether to report the wrongdoing, potentially jeopardizing the colleague’s career and damaging team dynamics, or to remain silent and compromise their own ethical principles. Another example can be an employee who faces an ethical dilemma when asked by their supervisor to manipulate financial data to present a more favorable picture of the company’s performance. The employee must weigh the potential consequences of refusing the unethical request, such as strained relationships with superiors or even job loss, against the moral implications of participating in deceptive practices.

Think outside of yourself when it comes to making decisions on ethical dilemmas. Your decision doesn’t only affect you but it can affect all individuals within your company as well as its stakeholders. How we choose to respond to an ethical situation can have an effect on ourselves and others physically , emotionally , and maybe even spiritually. Your career, reputation , family , safety & security is all at stake so choose wisely. Most of these opportunities reside in the way you deliver service or respond to crises.

An employee exhibits ethical decision-making skills by reporting instances of workplace harassment, despite potential backlash or discomfort, emphasizing their commitment to a workplace culture that values respect, inclusion, and the well-being of all team members. Another example , when faced with a choice between maximizing short-term profits and adhering to environmental sustainability principles, a business executive demonstrates ethical decision-making skills by prioritizing long-term environmental responsibility, even if it means accepting lower immediate financial gains. How you react to the policies and practices of your company, The choices you make personally and in team situations, How you fulfill your obligations to co – workers and customers,  How you present your company and its products to customers and shareholders and How you deal with outside agencies , contractors, and vendors are opportunities to perform good ethical decision making skills regardless of internal or outside influences. When it comes to ethics , there is no on & off switch on when to act on and deliver good ethics in any situation. People are always watching you at any given moment so you must be aware and careful of how others perceive you and your actions.

Ethical behavior pertains to actions that align with a set of moral principles and values, reflecting what is considered right or good, even if not explicitly regulated by laws. Legal behavior, on the other hand, strictly adheres to established laws and regulations within a given jurisdiction, regardless of whether those actions are perceived as morally right or wrong.  The Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability Committee is in charge of enforcing and upholding the legal behavior and policies when ethical behavior in itself cannot surmount to adhering to the company rules and guidelines.

A Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability Committee is a specialized group within an organization tasked with overseeing and advancing the company’s commitment to ethical business practices, social responsibility, and environmental sustainability. This committee plays a crucial role in shaping and implementing policies that align with the organization’s values and contribute to positive societal and environmental impacts. Its responsibilities often include developing strategies to minimize the company’s ecological footprint, promoting fair labor practices, and engaging in philanthropic initiatives. The committee serves as a driving force in integrating sustainability into business operations, ensuring transparency in reporting, and maintaining accountability for the company’s impact on various stakeholders. By fostering a culture of responsible business practices, the Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability Committee helps organizations navigate the complex landscape of corporate social responsibility, ultimately contributing to long-term success and positive contributions to the wider community and the environment.

One example of a company that has an corporate responsibility & sustainability committee embedded within its corporate structure is “Nike”.  As stated in thomasnet website ,  Nike leverages the unifying power of sports to promote its CSR agenda in three key areas: diversity and inclusion, community investment, and environmental sustainability.  Let’s start off with Nike’s diversity and inclusion program.  In an effort to provide a healthy and tolerant work environment for all employees, Nike supports an environment that promotes celebrating diversity and inclusion. With two new programs like the Juneteenth learning initiative and their Unconscious Bias Awareness program to promote racial equality and social change. Also stated in thomasnet website ,   in 2020, Nike allocated $4 million to support diversity and inclusion in communities throughout North America through its Until We All Win program. Additionally, eight of Nike’s Employee Networks donated $25,000 a year to nonprofit organizations focusing on promoting social equality, regardless of race, gender, and sexual orientation.  Throughout 2020-21, Nike laid out a five-year plan for creating more diversity in their workforce, which included a target goal of 50% representation of women and 35% representation of racial and ethnic minorities in their corporate workforce by 2025.[3] In conjunction with this initiative, Nike announced an investment of $125 million over the next five years to support businesses committed to “leveling the playing field.”  Those that align to these opportunities presented to them can surely reap the benefits.

How about we take into account Nike’s sustainability program. Nike motto is  if there “is no planet, there is no sport”. As stated in thomasnet website , through the Supplier Climate Action Program, Nike ensures their suppliers and manufacturers are committed to their goal of carbon neutrality by 2025. So far, the company announced that all of their North American facilities, as well as 48% of their global operations, are operating on 100% renewable energy, and 99.9% of manufacturing waste from their tier 1 suppliers have been diverted from landfills. Under this new program, there was also a 30% reduction of freshwater used in manufacturing textiles and materials in 2020.

Taking advantage of reusable energy and recyclable products, Nike has committed themselves to introduce sustainable materials into their product line. Nike is focusing on sustainable materials such as Flyleather, a material made with at least 50% recycled leather scraps. So far, over 4 billion plastic bottles have been reprocessed into polyester and other textiles that are used in their products.

In conclusion, Nike’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts and ethical behavior showcase a commitment to sustainable and socially conscious business practices. Through initiatives such as the Supplier Climate Action Program, the company demonstrates a dedication to minimizing its environmental impact, promoting fair labor practices, and investing in communities. Nike’s transparency in reporting and ongoing efforts to address concerns in its supply chain underscore a commitment to ethical conduct. While challenges may arise in navigating the complexities of global operations, the company’s ongoing initiatives and emphasis on continuous improvement signal a dedication to ethical practices and responsible corporate citizenship. As Nike navigates the evolving landscape of CSR, it serves as an example of a major corporation striving to integrate ethical considerations into its core business strategy.

Ethics Writing Assignment- Old Navy (week E)

Gap Inc. was founded in 1969, Banana Republic was founded in 1978, Old Navy founded in 1994, and Athleta was founded in 1998. These four stores are sister stored which means they were bought by one another, and they share similar ways their organization in built on. The store that I will be focusing on is Old Navy, I have a personal connection with the store since I still work on it during the weekends. When I first started, I had through go through Old Navy’s onboarding program to make sure I have the understanding and background of Old Navy. When seeing the on boarding video I noticed that Old Navy is a non-profit organization. They have a lot of volunteer work and have donations. Old Navy has committed over $2 million annually to nonprofit partners, including the longtime partners Boys & Girls club.

Philanthropy: Old Navy can establish partnerships with local charities and organizations to support causes aligned with their values. This can include donating a portion of sales to these organizations or organizing fundraising events. For example, not that long ago the Old Navy location that I work in was taking donation for kids who have been exploited and trafficked.

Energy Conservation: The company can invest in energy-efficient technologies and practices across their stores and distribution centers. This can include using LED lighting, implementing smart heating and cooling systems, and optimizing energy usage in their operations.

Sustainable Supply Chain: Old Navy should prioritize working with suppliers who follow sustainable and ethical practices. This means ensuring fair labor conditions, minimizing waste, and reducing the environmental impact throughout the supply chain.

Reducing Carbon Footprint: The organizations can set goals to reduce greenhouse gas emission by implementing initiatives such as renewable energy sourcing, utilizing electric vehicles for transportation, and implementing carbon offset programs.

Fair Trade: Old Navy can improve transparency and ethical sourcing by emphasizing fair trade practices. This involves working with suppliers who ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and environmentally sustainable practices.

Community Service: Encourage employees to participate in community service activities by offering paid time off for volunteer work. Additionally, Old Navy can support local community projects through financial contributions and partnerships.

Employee Volunteerism: Establish an employee volunteer program that allows employees to give back and engage in volunteer activities during work hours. This can promote team building, boost employee morale and contribute to the betterment of society.

Old Navy can positively impact its employees and the local community by implementing sustainability practices, supporting community projects, and promoting employee volunteerism. The actions not only among employees and customers, setting an example for the retail industry.

Ethics Assignment Paychex

I chose Paychex, a leading payroll software provider because I have interacted with and benefited from its services for years. I was very proud to see it listed on the World’s Most Ethical Companies Ethisphere website and it has been awarded Honorees 15 times. I started to research deeply into the company’s efforts concerning Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainable business practices. Paychex invests a lot into their efforts to commit to Corporate Social Responsibility and many of their projects point to it. You can find a page on their website for every campaign that is dedicated to the many programs around CSR like philanthropy, energy conservation, sustainable supply chains, reducing carbon footprint, fair trade, community service, volunteerism, etc.

PayChex believes that charitable giving is engrained in its culture and is central to its corporate identity. Paychex Charitable Foundation was founded in 2014 and by this, they actively engage in providing support to the community. Just recently on November 11th, they posted on social media about their efforts to support the @GarySiniseFound’s mission of creating and supporting unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen, and build communities. Paychex is committed to reducing the environmental impact that’s caused by its operations and they are constantly revising their Environmental Policy to align with their goal of achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. Paychex is a supporter of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

Paychex has a record that speaks for itself when it comes to its accomplishments in Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainable business practices but if there’s something I would recommend it would be to partner with other companies who are also just as invested in the health and well-being of society and the environment and to create educational campaigns that would urge other companies, FANG and start-ups alike, and educate them on the benefits it will hold for the community at large. Also after looking through Glassdoor and reading some of the reviews left by employees who work at Paychex, it is clear that there is a  disconnect between the upper management and those who work under them, especially those in payroll reps. This is made clear from the many reviews that expressed this dissatisfaction as a con of working in the company. Taking time to foster and grow the relationship between colleagues is very important to cultivating a healthy work environment and building trust.

Paychex is an extraordinary company and it has proved itself to be a strong advocate of Corporate Social Responsibility and being a business that adopts sustainable practices. I hope that they will continue these virtuous pursuits and be an example to other businesses.

Ethics Writing Assignment

Upon reading the assignment, Dunkin’ Donuts was the first company that came to mind. Every morning, I buy an iced coffee along with an egg and cheese croissant from them before heading to school. It’s become a daily part of my routine and is one that I look forward to more than anything. What drove me to choose this company over all the others is something more personal to me, but I’ll go over that a bit later.

The first thing I want to go over is their commitment to replace ALL of their polystyrene cups with new double-walled paper cups by 2025. According to their estimates, that would remove one billion foam cups from annual waste streams which is massive. The switch to paper cups is also an excellent choice as well, as paper is biodegradable and will have a less harmful effect on the environment should it still be littered. I’ve always been someone who was passionate about the state of the Earth and climate change and have done what I could to lessen my personal impact on nature and the world around me.

Another goal that Dunkin’ is committed to is 100% compliance for sustainable, traceable, and no deforestation impact palm oil in donut fry oil. This is arguably even more important than their last commitment; deforestation has been a problem for decades and has only recently become worse. With the rapid rise in the human population, the need for housing, and the global economic market growing at a quickened pace to further meet the needs and wants of consumers, forested areas have been bulldozed down to make room for construction. In doing so, our air quality has become significantly worse, and the ozone layer is depleting. While it might not be the thing that saves us, any bit of awareness around the subject of our ecosystem and climate is helpful.

Furthermore, Dunkin’ has slowly and steadily been updating its menu. In 2020, they added a variety of options for both vegetarians and vegans to be able to enjoy their food and drink items more often. This allows for non-vegan products to become more sustainable by allowing those who could not consume them to have a wider array of decisions. It also comes into play for people like me who have lactose intolerance and IBS by allowing me to have my coffee with oat milk instead of dairy (yes, I still order the egg and cheese croissant anyway, don’t judge me).

For me though, the most important thing that led to my decision with Dunkin’ Donuts was the Israel-Palestine conflict. I’ve lost family members in Palestine to bombings and raids by the IDF, and to see companies like Starbucks and McDonald’s go out of their way to offer themed foods and drinks dedicated to the people who killed my family left a sour taste in my mouth. While Dunkin’ hasn’t outrightly spoken out against the genocide going on, they also have refused to show any sort of support towards it. For me, that’s enough to keep me loyal.

If there WAS one recommendation I had for them, it would be to speak out and rally behind the people who have been under a brutal occupation for decades. The Israel-Palestine didn’t just start in October, it’s been going on since the end of the Second World War. It’s a shame that so many people turn a blind eye to the death of innocents, especially when those who are disproportionately being killed are a minority in the US. Other than that, showing more solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community outside of Pride Month would be an excellent decision as well. Oftentimes I see major corporations change their logo for Pride Month only to remove it the SECOND that July rolls around, and, to them, that’s considered solidarity. Even if it’s only periodically, having events every couple of months can dramatically increase their social favor and show that they actually care about the community.

Ethics Assignment

The company I choose is Ben and Jerry’s, it is a company that manufactures ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet. Founded in May 5, 1978 in Burlington, Vermont started off as an ice cream parlor to a multinational brand in a couple decades with the founders being Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. Ben and Jerry is dedicated to human rights and to preserve the natural environment

Ben and Jerry’s persevere the environment by reducing their carbon footprint by lessening their waste and promote renewable electricity sources. Their company plans to use 100% renewable energy and reduce their emissions by 40% by 2025 right now a single Ben and jerry’s produce about 3.4 pounds of carbon dioxide. Ben and also looks closely after their farmers and the wellbeing of their cows. They have Global animal partnership (GAP) who make sure each cow is healthy and well cared for

Ben and Jerry’s advocates for human rights and honest labor practices they are “the very first dairy buyer to adopt the Milk with Dignity program, an independent farmworker-led human rights standard for working conditions on dairy farms, on farms in the Northeast US. And for farmers’ participation in the Caring Dairy program and Milk with Dignity program, we pay them additional money, so it’s a win-win for everyone.” Ben and Jerry’s also “support grassroots groups throughout the U.S. and its territories that are led by the people most impacted by the legacies of white supremacy culture as they organize for racial equity, and social and environmental justice.” The glass root group “center the leadership and collective action of Black communities, Indigenous communities, and communities of color in their efforts to build movements to dismantle oppressive and discriminatory systems toward a more just and inclusive world.”

After researching about Ben and Jerry”s I’ve realized that there isn’t much I would do to change I think the company is already on the right path. what I would recommend is that they try to expand their glass roots outside of Vermont and try to influence other companies or people to join them or do something similar by like having ad campaigns or have workshops that makes it easier for people and companies to be more informed and possibly more willing to join them.

Ethics Assignment

The business I chose was Starbucks. Starbucks is 99% ethically sourced. Their coffee is soon to be the world’s first sustainably sourced agricultural product. Starbucks has also made great strides in pursuing other sustainable business practices. One of the practices the company has implemented was the removal of plastic straws. Starbucks has changed its cold drink cups, to a sippy cup format. The usage of non-biodegradable straws isn’t good for the environment, and the company has ceased to include this with cold beverage purchases. Starbucks also does a wonderful job giving company stock incentives back to employees on an annual basis. This leads to improved employee morale, and retention. I was a store manager at a Starbucks location on the upper west side of Manhattan. Every night we would put aside the food and drinks that were soon to expire and donate them to a nonprofit organization. This is done to ensure someone eats the product, rather than assume it would be purchased by a customer, while waiting for the expiration date.

Week E:Ethics and social responsibility and entrepreneurship.

New Balance is a footwear company founded in 1906 and stands out for its focus on quality and local manufacturing known for its comfort and durability. New Balance has a great commitment to innovation and business ethics. New Balance has also demonstrated its great commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). The first of them is environmental sustainability and the second is to improve working conditions in its supply chain and has participated in programs and donations to support local communities and social causes. For today’s assignment, I would like to focus on environmental sustainability and working conditions.

The New Balance company has adopted 3 measures in terms of environmental sustainability, the first is Sustainable Materials, so the company is working to integrate more ecological materials for the manufacturing of products. The second measure that New Balance intends to reduce is energy efficiency, for this New Balance seeks to reduce energy consumption and gas emissions in its operations for which New Balance has implemented more efficient practices and new technologies to meet its objective the Third is waste management. , the responsibility that New Balance has with waste is very important in that they are trying to recycle and minimize waste in the manufacturing of their products. This demonstrates New Balance’s commitment to environmental sustainability, one of its 2025 goals of stopping the use and dumping of hazardous chemicals.

Now, regarding working conditions, New Balance is conducting training and development by providing training and development programs for supplier workers expanding their skills and working conditions. In addition, they are also working with NGOs that focus on the defense of labor rights and improving working conditions; these actions are part of the commitment to the new balance.

Salaries and benefits are an issue that cannot be ignored despite being a very good company, in fact, as far as I was able to investigate the minimum wage regulation only once with a supplier from China in 2021. The New Balance company produces certain products outside the country of course for reasons of logistics and costs. however, today the minimum is still given taking into account that in many countries the minimum wage does not cover the necessary expenses but currently, the company is already taking action on the matter regarding this type. of issues.

After having read and analyzed I have come to the conclusion that New Balance is very committed to achieving its objectives with respect to reducing the environmental impact of the creation of its products and also the commitment to labor rights and the improvement of the working conditions. However, I think they should streamline this process so that it is a Fair payment so that their workers can work motivated.

Ethics of H&M

H&M is one of the world’s largest fashion retailers. And it has been actively working towards corporate social responsibility and sustainable business practices. The company has recognized the importance of addressing environmental and social concerns within the fashion industry.

In recent years, H&M has implemented various initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental impact. One notable effort is the commitment to using 100% sustainable or recycled materials by 2030. H&M has also launched a garment recycling program, encouraging customers to return old clothes for recycling. Which I personally have taken part in. For every bag of clothes you drop off to an H&M location, you recieve a 20% off coupon for your next purchase. This approach aligns with circular fashion principles, aiming to minimize waste and extend the lifespan of garments.

In terms of energy conservation, H&M has invested in renewable energy sources and aims to be 100% circular and climate-positive throughout its entire value chain by 2030. “We have signed long-term virtual power purchase agreements in UK, Sweden and Spain to cover electricity consumption in our operations in most European markets. By entering into purchase agreements like these, we are helping to increase the amount of renewable electricity available.(“Climate”).” The company is making strides in improving energy efficiency in its stores and warehouses and has set ambitious targets to reduce its carbon footprint.

H&M has embraced fair trade practices by supporting fair wages and working conditions for factory workers. “We conducted 51 on-site evaluations at our suppliers and identified potential energy efficiency improvements of almost 20% in tier 1 facilities and over 25% in tier 2. These assessments have led to planned energy efficiency measures.(“Climate)” The company is actively engaged in initiatives promoting ethical labor practices, although challenges persist in the complex global supply chain.

In the realm of philanthropy, the H&M Foundation focuses on global challenges such as education, clean water, and women’s empowerment. This demonstrates a commitment to making a positive impact beyond the immediate scope of the fashion industry.

However, to further enhance its ethical and sustainable practices, H&M could consider increasing transparency in its supply chain, providing consumers with more information about origins and production processes of their products. Strengthening partnerships with organizations dedicated to fair labor practices and environmental conservation could also bolster H&M’s commitment to CSR (corporate social responsibility).

Encouraging community service and volunteerism among its employees could enhance H&M’s social responsibility initiatives. This could involve supporting local communities in regions where the company operates and fostering a sense of responsibility among employees.

In conclusion, while H&M has made significant strides in adopting sustainable practices and corporate social responsibility, continuous improvement is essential. Recommendations include increased transparency, strengthened partnerships, and a focus on community engagement. By implementing these practices, H&M can further solidify its commitment to ethical, socially responsible, and sustainable business operations.

Adidas Innovation Leads to Net-Zero Carbons Emission by 2040

The first company that popped out from my head when it comes into stuff that I really look into it was Adidas. Every time I talk about shoes, the first brand that always I check regularly was this brand without any hesitation especially during the new release specific type of shoes such as Adidas Samba or maybe Yeezy that has been discontinued earlier this year.

Adidas is one of some giant companies that sells many apparels and also footwear for daily-use or maybe exercise equipment. But there are many companies that compete the market since we all know that every-day basis wear is really a thing nowadays and these brands are really showing off their greatness of their products with its unique way. However, there are plenty of controversies happening out there due to the leftovers of the production residue that harm the environment. The company itself has deployed so many steps in order to keep this as a way to fix the issue while in the meantime, also provides the necessity of what market needs. So now, I would like to share some steps on how the company carries out the problem and take it as a commitment to sustain the environment.

Adidas is a renowned for their commitment to reduce their carbon footprint by taking the initiative to do the innovation such as The Climate Pledge, which targeting for net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2040. They have spent so many times in researches just to generate a new method of production and also designs to reform as a part of supporting the project. For example, until today, Adidas has reached their personal peak best of 96% of recycled polyester as a proof of their success. This is to say that there are so many changes that has been made in order to reach this stage. The changes were such as changing the materials into the virgin fossil-based materials, making the life extension of the products so the customer could wear it for longer period of time, and also provide carbon footprint details for each product.

Now, they also have served so many supporting events to support the program while inviting the people to join the mission as part of the humanity service that helps to support the earth.  I believe by creating new innovation specifically into more environmentally friendly materials would also help the project to reach the goals of net-zero carbon in 2040. However, some critics also suggest that Adidas might be focusing on distant goals rather than deciding immediate goals to be the leader of sustainable company in general of manufacturing and also the longstanding of its company in this field of industry.

In conclusion, I believe by doing the steps on each progression would lead into the better sustainable company as soon as possible, instead of doing zero progress for years. The project of net-zero carbons emissions by 2040 will be easily achieved if these companies also join and participate into it and together will bring to the greater end of result later.
