Seeking Love with Humor in We Should Hang Out Sometime by Josh Sundquist

book cover of We Should Hang Out Sometime by Josh SundquistWe Should Hang Out Sometime is a memoir written by Josh Sundquist, detailing his experiences with dating and relationships as a disabled person. Josh was diagnosed with cancer as a child and underwent treatment that resulted in the amputation of one of his legs. The book explains his attempts to find love, while demonstrating his failures along the way.

A variety of stories are told about his crushes, dates, and multiple attempts in finding a significant other, all ranging from humorous to heartbreaking. By interviewing and analyzing his past relationships, like Sasha Wright aka a Miss North Dakota contestant, he determines what went wrong and what he learned from those experiences, all while providing insight into his thoughts and feelings as a disabled person navigating the dating world.

Soon after losing his leg, Josh gave himself two rules: Never be a burden and Never be different from everyone else. This was a way for him to fit in and not be treated differently by everyone else. Using these rules, he forced himself to conform to social norms and hide his disability. Soon, he quickly overcame such a negative mentality after gaining enough life experience to realize that it wasn’t healthy or sustainable.

Throughout the book, one of its strengths is Josh’s ability to balance humor with the serious subject matter, making the book an enjoyable read.

Honestly, I would most definitely recommend this book, as it’s a well-written and insightful book that provides a unique perspective on dating and disability. Josh’s humor, honesty, and vulnerability make it a compelling and enjoyable read, while also offering important lessons and reflections on love and relationships.
