With my three beautiful children—my curious and joyful three-year-old twins and my imaginative and thoughtful seven-year-old—reading is more than just a bedtime routine. It’s a magical time where our imaginations take flight and where I connect deeply with each of them.
I’ve learned that when reading to young children, especially toddlers like my twins, it’s so important to make the story come alive. I always change my voice for different characters and weave their names into the tales, turning them into a brave king or a clever little princess. Their eyes light up, and every time I finish the story, they shout, “Again!” It’s in these repeat moments that I see the story truly taking root in their little hearts.
For the seven-year-old, the same stories take on new meaning. He asks questions, makes up his own endings, and sometimes even adds new characters. It’s a joy to see how reading helps him grow not only in vocabulary, but in creativity and confidence.
One thing I’ve learned through reading to my children is that the words must be clear and gentle. Short, simple phrases open little minds far more than long, heavy sentences. And the pictures? They matter just as much. Colorful, expressive illustrations can tell a story all on their own and draw even the youngest listener into the world of the book.
Reading isn’t just about teaching language or telling a story. It’s about building a bond, nurturing imagination, and creating shared moments of joy. When I read with my children, I’m not just helping them learn. I’m showing them how beautiful and fun the world of books can be.
About the author Hi, I’m Tunde! I’m a psychology major at BMCC. As a mom of three, I’ve seen firsthand how much of an impact books can have on kids. That’s why I’ve developed a passion for reviewing children’s books—because I truly believe reading is one of the most important things for young minds. It not only sparks their imagination but also helps them develop the skills and insights they’ll need as they grow. Through my reviews, I hope to help other parents and caregivers find books that not only entertain but also foster growth, learning, and emotional development in children.
