Without my love for literature, I would have never discovered my love for writing or creating music. I have always been a bookworm, there were times I would stay up from night until dawn on a school night just to read my Wattpad stories. Wattpad introduced me to writers that were everyday people, just like me. It was refreshing to have a platform where young teens could write creatively and share with their peers. Gradually, after being a reader on the website I began typing up my thoughts and ideas and published several books on there. After discovering different types of literature I became more drawn to poetry, and that’s when I developed my passion for music. With artists/poets like Tupac and Jill Scott as some of my influences, I began to write poems and recite them, and shortly after started formulating them into songs.
To actually understand an artist’s lyrics, you have to read them. Some people just repeat lyrics because the rhymes sound nice but miss the overall message, or miss the use of word schemes, metaphors, hyperbole, imagery, symbolism, and analogies. I’ve always enjoyed picking apart an artist’s lyrics. It’s exciting to see how other people can be so innovative with words, which encourages me to always enhance my vocabulary to stray away from being repetitive. The beauty in reading is that everyone interprets things differently and has their own perspectives, literature never has just one meaning. Literature is a type of art and art is supposed to be seen from different views, everyone relates and connects differently, same with music.
