Summary
The goal of this project is to produce an easy to access and read map of inequities facing the Afro-Colombian community, especially in Valle del Cauca, a department of Western Colombia. This population is underrepresented in national statistics and Census data, and is disproportionately affected by the presence of over 100 sugarcane companies in the area. The monocropping of sugarcane has been correlated with respiratory illness, reproductive health problems, water contamination, and the ingestion of chemicals. In addition, the mental and physical health effects of exploitative agricultural labor also contribute to disparities in standard of living and health care access.
