  •  excerpt of Lopez, White by Law: The Legal Construction of Race
    • According to Lopez, why were Asian applicants for citizenship more likely to argue that they were “white” than that they were “black?” Is this a surprise, according to Lopez? Why/why not?
    • On p.66, Lopez discusses the difference between “scientific evidence” and “common knowledge”– what is the difference and how are these types of information used to determine someone’s race in citizenship cases?
  • Executive Order 9066: Resulting in the Relocation of Japanese (1942)
    • What does this order say, in your own words? Select 1-2 quotes that you think best represent the meaning of the order.

  • For your post this week, please reflect on the following questions:
    • From the readings and film, what do we learn about the criteria for citizenship? Who was allowed to be a citizen or belong to the U.S. and what was required?
    • What do you think defines “citizenship” today– by this, I mean not just the legal definition but also the social definition. Who is considered to be a part of the U.S.? What does it mean to belong here? What should be the definition, in your opinion?
