- excerpt of Lopez, White by Law: The Legal Construction of Race
- According to Lopez, why were Asian applicants for citizenship more likely to argue that they were “white” than that they were “black?” Is this a surprise, according to Lopez? Why/why not?
- On p.66, Lopez discusses the difference between “scientific evidence” and “common knowledge”– what is the difference and how are these types of information used to determine someone’s race in citizenship cases?

- What does this order say, in your own words? Select 1-2 quotes that you think best represent the meaning of the order.

- Meeting at Tule Lake (on Kanopy) (33 minutes)
- What do the former Japanese internees in this documentary have in common? What are some of the experiences they shared at Tule Lake?

- What do you think defines “citizenship” today– by this, I mean not just the legal definition but also the social definition. Who is considered to be a part of the U.S.? What does it mean to belong here? What should be the definition, in your opinion?
