Yes, we mean literally abolish the police by Mariame Kaba- this essay goes through some of the history that Nina mentioned today and makes an argument for why “reform” will never actually get to the problems with policing because they are part of its foundation.
A short video that explains “restorative justice“– I’m interested to hear what you think might be applicable in the case that we talked about today.
This article defines the terms “community accountability,”restorative justice” and “transformative justice” and compares these approaches to addressing harm that has been caused.
Information about the new NYC “Mental Health Teams” that will serve as emergency responders for mental health crises: the NYC press release about the program. It’s modeled in part after the CAHOOTS program which is in Eugene (not Portland!), Oregon.
