Thuc Thao Tran DB INTRO

Hello everyone, who is reading what I have written here. My name is Thuc Thao Vy Tran, I know it will be difficult for you to remember, you can call me Aley. I’m from Vietnam, I’ve been in the US for over 4 years and I went to high school here. I graduated from high school at Emma Lazarus High school and I am currently a 2nd year student at BMCC. My major is Sociology, at first when I said I wanted to tell my father that I wanted to study Sociology and become an Advisor. He advised me a lot and I feel like he didn’t like it too much. But I told him I wanted to work with others and listen to what they wanted to say.

And my life changed a lot when I graduated from high school, I felt like I was more independent. And I think as we grow up, we will really need friends to share. I don’t know if anyone is like me, but I have a hard time sharing my feelings with my mom! I feel like I’ve talked about my family enough for you to get to know me, I’ll be back in class. I chose this class because I wanted to better understand what has happened in history in Vietnam. Asia has so many countries that I know that all have different historical information!

I don’t think my life is not very interesting nowadays, because I’ve been at home for so long. Every day, I only use the computer to watch film and watch youtube. And now when I go back to school, I have to check my mail and finish my homework every day. I know there will be people like me and I don’t know what to share next. What I want to say in the end is, I hope I can know more about the history of the different Asian countries and especially Vietnam.

Thank you!!

Christal Yu – DB Introduction

Hi everyone!

I’m Christal! I’m 22 and will be graduating from BMCC Spring 2021 with an A.S. in Human Services. I’m the Office Manager for a Muay Thai school & gym nearby BMCC, so I dabble in Muay Thai/Boxing (but mostly just send emails allll day). I’m working on committing to yoga and currently have a billion plants in my room (because it seems to be my goal to live in a Brooklyn jungle).

My professional interests lie in various facets of social justice, public policy, and community work. I’m not sure what field that will lead me to exactly, but I’m excited to use my developed passion for justice, communication skills, and empowerment geared, people oriented nature to help shape the world into a brighter place. I am currently extremely grateful to be a Leadership Fellow with the CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute, a fellowship program which seeks to identify up and coming leaders in NYC food justice. It has been challenging, but beyond interesting to explore career paths I didn’t know existed and to grow professionally! If anyone is interested, I’m happy to pass along application info if the fellowship continues into 2021 (it isn’t advertised to BMCC students for some reason, even tho its CUNY wide, which sucks!)

As a second generation Chinese-American, I think it is extremely important to be connected to one’s culture as well as aware of other POC communities’ histories and values! My primary concern with the course is with how much of America’s complex racist/xenophobic history toward various Asian-American groups might make me feel personally while learning in class, especially since these attitudes still exist today. I think its key to understand history so we can do better in the current and I hope we’re all able to learn with this in mind! 🙂

Edit: I realized I forgot to include my experiences with writing (and also that I’m short of the word count)! I have always loved English, both writing and reading it. I’m fortunate to have been able to develop my skills and feel extremely confident in them. My only apprehension is that I do tend to struggle with research papers. I have experience writing a few of this length and type, starting from high school. However, I’ve always struggled with picking a topic, committing to it, and being able to fully plan out my thoughts/argument. I usually find myself running behind schedule and anxiously hammering disjointed words down on paper for the sake of meeting deadlines. I’m cautiously optimistic about improving this past habit and challenging myself to write a paper to my full ability.

Anaise Baez DB Introduction

Hello everyone,

My name is Anaise Baez. I am 18 years old and in my 3rd semester at BMCC. I lived in the Bronx my whole life and I am currently in an liberal arts major. I really enjoy listening to music such as different instrumentals (piano, guitar, violin, etc.) as well as music in different languages. I also enjoy doing art or cooking on my spare time and playing games but I’m also pretty shy and don’t really do many outdoor activities.  I’m excited to learn about different cultures and hope that we all have a great semester together.

I have 2 younger brothers. I enjoy an active lifestyle as well as reading and baking. I am currently working as a nanny to two adorable kids. Alexis Gayle DB- Introduction

My name is Alexis Gayle. I am 19 years old. I live in Jamaica, Queens and culturally my family is from Jamaica. I am a junior in college, but a sophomore here at BMCC. I am a Studio Art Major with interests in being in the Interior Design field. I love all arts including dancing, music, and other performing arts. Ever since I was 9 years old I became infatuated with fashion and modeling. Even though my main interest was in styling of outfits and makeup, I realized that I had so much talent to discover in myself. As I grew older, I started to draw, sketch, and take photos of nature and scenery. Then emerged my interest in architecture and structuring my own homes by sketching blueprints and designing layouts in high school. In art, you have a lot of control over how creative you want to be. My goals for this class is to gain as much insight into the aspects opening my mind to various uses of design in Asian American history. Even though I have no experience with learning Asian American history, I am excited and interested in seeing the kinds of past events and current events that occur. These events could involve controversial topics that can spark a discussion of interest and I would love to gain insight into that history. In terms of writing, I’ve had a great experience overall from high school and I feel confident that I will use my skills in the researching component of the class as well.

Matthew Torres – DB Intro

Hello everybody! My name is Matthew Torres. I was born and raised here in NY, Queens to be exact and I am 27 years old. I started attending college late (this is my third time returning), but I am glad that I decided to continue with my education. This is my last semester here at BMCC and I will be going on to a bachelor’s program in the Spring or Fall, depending on when the programs I want begin. I am a multimedia programming and design major and would like to become a graphic designer after receiving my bachelor’s degree. I am also learning programming, but that part of my current studies doesn’t interest me in the same way. I feel that programming is very copy and paste. There is room for creativity, but not in the same way as digital design. I am the type of person who doesn’t like to take in information and then put it out the same way. I like to take what I have learned and use it in different ways. I took this class because, to be honest, I needed it to graduate. It fits my need for a world studies course, as well as a writing-intensive course. Although I need this class to graduate, I also chose this class because I feel it is something I would not study in my free time. College is not only to help you secure a better job or start a career, but to expand your knowledge. I would like to learn about different cultures that I know nothing about. I believe that it will give me a better understanding of the people around me, given the fact that I live in Queens, which has a very large Asian American population. I look forward to learning a lot of new things from this class. In addition to what was spoken about in class, I am very comfortable with writing. I believe that I am very good at putting down what is in my mind onto paper or on screen. I have always felt that this comes naturally, therefore, I believe I will do well in this class. I also think that all this writing will be beneficial to me when it is time to do extensive amounts of writing, such as a senior thesis.

Jericho Faderon DB Intro

Hello everyone, my name is Jericho Faderon and I am a Computer Science here at BMCC from the Philippines who moved to the US at the age of six. I am interested in my major since I want to make tech that’ll help influence and make the world a better place. I’ve decided to take Asian American history as it is part of my general electives but I hope to relearn ideas not necessarily expanded upon in American History textbooks. I can’t wait to meet all of you today and hope that we all do well this semester.

Kahli Hodzic BD INTRO

Nina Wentt DB Intro

Hi Class,

I hope all is well and I am very enthusiastic to continue our discussions throughout the semester. My name is Nina I was born and raised here in Brooklyn, NY to an Immigrant father (Panama) and a half black half white mother. I am also a full-time multi media artist in Brooklyn. Art basically encapsulates my life and I find myself being inspired by many things most of them macabre. My friends would probably describe me as that one goth chick whose music taste matches her clothes but not her personality (yes, I am a major metal head but also listens to kpop) who does art all the time but when I am not painting, photographing or illustrating you can find me hiking along the Appalachian (Blue Ridge Mountains). I have always been interested in studies on cultures separate from my own and I anticipate learning about how different people with  roots along the continent of Asia travel through life here in America and also how they honor culture here in America. I’m very excited to learn more.
