Phi discusses how conservative Asian-Americans are about conflicts with police and black issues. Asian-Americans themselves are often victims of police brutality, and when we (Asian-Americans) understand the wrongdoings of history and our people and side with those who oppress us, it tells us that this is not protecting us. Phi says Asian Americans should stand on the side of the community fighting against systemic injustice and oppression and fight together. Jen’s article “Chinese conservatism” also discusses the conservative stance of Asian-Americans in favor of discriminators(police officers). The purpose of these letters is to show that Asian-Americans should understand, help and strengthen the struggles faced by many black people.

  1. Hi Minjee,

I agree with you in that when we side with the oppressors, it does not protect us. Based on my own experience with the adults in my own community as an Asian-American, they always are quick to blame the victims of police brutality stating things like their criminal record instead of looking at the bigger picture and delving deep into who is truly at fault in these scenarios. For too long and I believe this has influenced Chinese-conservatism but Asians in general look at white people as if they’re the model of greatness when in reality, they’re not.

    1. I agree! I think the culture of white glorification has been passed on through centuries. It isn’t going away any time soon either. A lot of these asians want to identify as white and therefore refuse to acknowledge that they face the same struggles are the black community and other POC.
