The article “Snapchat Wants You to Post. It is Willing to Pay Millions” by Taylor Lorenz show the Snapchat new feature “Spotlight”. It talked about the trend of social media transformation and potential of the influencer career.
Spotlight is a feature released by Snapchat and it is a short-from video platform that allows people share their short video like TikTok. It is the transformation of Snapchat from a messaging platform to a new type of social media app and it provides huge revenue distribution to influencers. From the article, we could know that Spotlight had been paid a huge amount of money to influencer. Cam Cassy,19, a TikTok influencer that posts videos on Snapchat, gained $3 million from Spotlight. Spotlight has a certain number of similar cases like it. Andrea Romo, Dan Newman, Katie Feeney, Cj OperAmericano, Joey Rogoff are also influencers that have earned more than a million on average. For now, Snapchat is the highest paying platform for them. It attracted them to be influencer and get nice payment from it.
Spotlight influencers have common characteristics. They are young. Some of them are Gen Y and Most of them are Gen Z. They are around 18 to 27. The potential of changing youth’s life causes the video-creator and influencer to become the trend career for young generation.
Spotlight also has competitors and difficulties. TikTok is a challenging competitor for Spotlight due to its peak and the focus of attention. Spotlight is not yet known as TikTok .it also lacks influences to provide sufficient fame to influencers. Moreover, the revenue in spotlight is divided between users. As increased users joined Spotlight, Spotlight may also face the challenge of market saturation like TikTok.
My experience of playing social media is watching random videos or clicking like button on friends post from YouTube and Instagram. I knew being a Youtuber or influencer from IG could earn money from platform, but I did not expect they could earn so much. It changed my thoughts of influencer. Now, I would consider not just watching videos but filming videos to be a millionaire. From what I learnt from articles and the “Fakey” game, I understand social media is a trend platform to contact youth and it has great development to become source of information and entertainment. The influences of social media on the world are inevitably led to concerns about accuracy of news.

Hi Jason, I agree that Spotlight has made people earn lot of money based on just posting a video and just blow it up. TikTok as been going viral with people making content but Spotlight has young influencers started there journey to make money rapidly compare to other social media. I agree that it takes lot to become a YouTuber or a influencer because you have to work hard to make good content for your audience to enjoy. We can also learn from those YouTuber or Influencer because they can teach us things that we didn’t really know about.
