A student named Shannon Nicholas was a smart studious individual who did well on all of her courses such as English and math. She would often get good grades on all her classes and never had GPA lower than 3.0. She loved to write so she felt really strong in her skills to do so. At the time she was in 8th grade, in order for to graduate she had to pass the proficiency exam which consisted of Reading, Writing, Math and Citizenship. She knew she would do well on the writing portion for sure, if anything she wouldn’t’ve have done as good on other parts of the test. After taking the test she saw that she passed every other portion of the test other than the writing part. She was shocked to see that something she felt so confident in wasn’t to be seen as being good enough to pass the exam. The first time she felt like balling her eyes out but she kept her composure. She thought she’ll pass it the next time around but she ended up failing again. This time around she did cry and went to her teacher and students wondering why she wasn’t able to pass when everyone around her appreciated her writing and people that did pass the test weren’t doing that good in there regular English class. Ultimately on the 3rd try she ended up passing the test but not feeling that confident in her writing anymore for the lack of validation she was receiving. She felt like a failure and as a result she no longer tried in her writing classes and fell out of love with writing.
My response to her reaction is that you can obviously take any form of criticism whether it be good or bad you just cant let it ruin what you find to be your passion. Everyone has their own opinions on things so one person or one result of something shouldn’t be a reason to stop going after what you love. Specifically when it comes to reading a book or passage depending on the audience it could result in good or bad responses. If its a passage on something that teens would be interested in, with the audience being teens then it could result in good feedback but lets say the audience is now adult’s they might not have positive feedback. Just because someone has something negative to say does not automatically mean that’s how everyone feels.
