Contents

Learning Outcomes

  • Articulate the role of widgets and plugins in a WordPress site
  • Describe how themes might affect site functionality and the way a site is displayed
  • Select themes, widgets, and plugins that match learning experience goals and student needs

Preparation for Tuesday, June 27

  • Share your favorite meme by uploading an image of it to this post in the R&R section of our community website.
  • Continue working on your course website by adding a draft of the assignment or activity that you discussed in your groups. You may also want to continue adding content to one or more units or modules, refining your instructor page, and/or creating a welcome announcement. As you work on your site, refer back to your Hopes and Dreams worksheet for inspiration.
  • Next Thursday, you’ll be “workshopping” your in-progress course website in your group. Begin thinking about an aspect of your site that you would like to share and jot down some notes and/or questions you would like to ask your group members.

Agenda for Tuesday, June 27

  • Invited guest: Soniya Munshi
  • Overview of themes, widgets, and plugins
  • Cohort conversations – add your colleagues to your OpenLab course

Preparation for Thursday, June 29

  • Read about accessibility and website design
These accessibility tips from North Idaho College are a good overview of what to keep in mind when creating your site. This accessibility guide has instructions about how to create accessible sites in WordPress. If you’d like a deeper dive into accessibility, you can also check out this Accessibility Toolkit from the CUNY Library (optional). We will discuss accessibility at our Thursday session
  • Continue working on your site
You may want to add some widgets to your footer or sidebar. Other activities could include adding content to one or more units, editing the site menu structure, creating an announcement or assignment, and updating the instructor page.
  • Prepare to workshop your site
On Thursday we’ll be meeting in cohorts to share the work we’ve done on our course websites. We’ll ask you to share:
    • one thing that you like about your site
    • one thing that you would like to improve or are trying to figure out how to do
    • plans for the site that have not yet been implemented

Agenda for Thursday, June 29

  • Assessment on the OpenLab
  • Review of teaching in the open and privacy options
  • Cohort conversations: workshopping your sites
