Pages and Posts: What’s the Difference?

Pages and posts are the two main ways of adding content to a WordPress site. Although they look quite similar, there are some important differences, which are summarized below.

Pages

  • Static content that doesn’t change frequently (e.g., home page, syllabus)
  • No categories or tags (usually)
  • No author or date displayed
  • No comments (usually)
  • Linked to from the navigation menu
  • Only site admin can create and edit

Posts

  • Dynamic content organized with newest content first (e.g., announcements, class discussion)
  • Can be organized by categories and tags
  • Author and date displayed (usually)
  • Readers can add comments (usually)
  • Displayed in post or category archives
  • Site admins, editors, and authors can create and edit
