There are many benefits to enhancing your public speaking skills, from personal to professional. On this life journey, you never know when you will be called upon to speak up. Personal benefits like being ready to give a eulogy at the funeral of a family member, giving a toast at a wedding, or just simply receiving an award. 70% of jobs today require some form of public speaking. Effective public speaking skills will benefit you, by making you look more professional and more attractive to employers. Most human beings will be nervous and scared in front of a crowd. When you enhance and develop the skill to speak in public you will be more confident and intellectual, which will help us fulfill essential roles in our family and community.

As stated by Jenn Q. Goddu, author of “Listening Effectively”, the difference between hearing and listening is that “Hearing is unintentional, whereas listening requires you to pay conscious attention.” I understand what she means by this because I often find myself hearing someone speak, but not fully internalizing what they are saying because I haven’t given them my full attention. We all have the ability to hear and “Hearing is something most everyone does without even trying” but to choose to absorb the meaning of the words requires intent. According to the author of “Critical Thinking and Reasoning”, Terri Russ J.D., critical thinking is to “evaluate the arguments presented and determine if their logic is sound or if they rely on fallacies to build this case.” Listening is the first component of practicing critical thinking and helps analyze and evaluate information better. Without really understanding the information one cannot evaluate it. Listening with fully undivided attention and without judgment will make you more open-minded. I think the barriers can be hard to avoid as we all like to jump to conclusions and assume, but learning to not do these things can make us better listeners and critical thinkers.

According to the text by Sheila Kasperek, there are a wide variety of visual aids that can be helpful when delivering a presentation. An example of a visual aid is the use of a demonstration during your presentation. Demonstrations are useful both as visual highlights that can capture the attention of the audience, as well as a way to illustrate your point to the audience. An example of a demonstration could be causing a controlled chemical reaction during a lecture on the science behind said reaction. Another potentially useful visual aid would be placing a short video into your presentation. A video can be used to bolster your message, such as playing a clip of President Roosevelt’s Infamy speech during a presentation on the Second World War. A third example of a visual aid would be a physical prop, which can be used to further connect the audience to your topic. An example of this would be Steve Job’s holding an iPhone during his first introduction of the product in 2007. To conclude, a visual aid can be an extremely useful tool when presenting, and can make a crucial difference in how well your speech resonates with your audience.

It is important for speakers to be objective, credible, knowledgeable, and make it relevant to the audience especially for informative speeches. I think the first most important thing is to be credible. According to Lisa Schreiber, Ph.D writer of -“Informative Speaking”,  “Credibility or ethos refers to an audience’s perception that the speaker is well prepared and qualified to speak on a topic (Fraleigh & Tuman, 2011). ” The speaker must research the topic well and ensure the information they are sharing has been fact-checked. That said they must also be very knowledgeable on the topic. Being objective keeps from letting personal opinions or biases affect the information being shared. Lastly, it would be helpful if the topic was relevant to the audience so they could have some prior knowledge before having to learn new information. Speakers can keep these things in mind in order to have a good speech.
