Abstract: The objective of this project is to produce and characterize nanoparticles containing a fluorescent molecule/dye named BAlq embedded inside. Using a core-shell encapsulation technique, we can control the size, shape, and concentration of the fluorescent dye in the nanoparticles. Previously synthesized silica nanoparticles are used as seeds for the growth of the fluorescent shell. To enhance the colloidal stability of the silica-BAlq nanoparticles, a second pure-silica shell was grown surrounding the dye-containing layer. These silica nanoparticles are meant to be used in the deposition of colloidal photonic crystals. Photonic crystals are nanostructures that are capable of interacting with light and are able to suppress the fluorescence emission from the BAlq. This leads the emitting dye to find alternative paths to decay, such as phosphorescence emission. This effect can enhance the efficiency of devices such as photovoltaic and LED devices.
