Lytic Bacteriophages Targeting Mycobacterium spp.

Abstract: Bacteriophages infect bacteria, some of them lyse the host cells (lytic phages) while others allow the host cell to survive while producing viral progeny. The ability of lytic phages to infect and destroy the host cells has prompted their evaluation as potential therapeutic agents. We previously presented our results working with Escherichia coli and bacteriophage T4. We were able to stablish the procedures in our laboratory to grow and titer lytic bacteriophages using T4 phage as a control. Our current project aims to optimize the procedure to identify lytic bacteriophages targeting Mycobacterium spp. For this purpose, we are planning to use Mycobacterium smegmatis and the phage ATCC® 11759-B1™ as a prototype model to identify phages, targeting Mycobacterium spp, in soil samples.
