Quiz 5, be sure your answer has a strong intro sentence restating the question, use examples and reference to text to suppport you 2-3 sentence answer and sum up with a strong conclusion.

Here is an example of a very strong and comprehensive answer: “As stated by Jenn Q. Goddu, author of “Listening Effectively”, the difference between hearing and listening is that “Hearing is unintentional, whereas listening requires you to pay conscious attention.” I understand what she means by this because I often find myself hearing someone speak, but not fully internalizing what they are saying because I haven’t given them my full attention. We all have the ability to hear and “Hearing is something most everyone does without even trying” but to choose to absorb the meaning of the words requires intent. According to the author of “Critical Thinking and Reasoning”, Terri Russ J.D., critical thinking is to “evaluate the arguments presented and determine if their logic is sound or if they rely on fallacies to build this case.” Listening is the first component of practicing critical thinking and helps analyze and evaluate information better. Without really understanding the information one cannot evaluate it. Listening with fully undivided attention and without judgment will make you more open-minded. I think the barriers can be hard to avoid as we all like to jump to conclusions and assume, but learning to not do these things can make us better listeners and critical thinkers.”

Discussion Board 5:

Post your written Introduction Speech outline in the body of the DB. Be sure to follow the outline template which is available for you on BB and the OpenLab. The speech should be 1-2 minutes and have a clear intro, body and conclusion. Respond to 2 classmate’s outlines with feedback, 2 pros and a grow.

Don’t just list off a series of your accomplishments. Try sharing a story about your self that showcases who you are at the core, or focus on one or 2 aspects of what has made you who you are or inspired your goals or focus in life. You might start with a quote you live by, a favorite song or someone you look up to. These stories and personal connections are more interesting and tell us more about who you are than a laundry list of your accomplishments. Have fun, be creative, and showcase your personality.

Let’s make this a great week,

Prof. Christina
