Sala Alzuber

  1. What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”?

I think a Repressive state Apparatus is a system that keeps order in society by using force or threats. Althusser uses the Word “repressive” because these institutions like the police, military and courts make people obey rules by punishing them if they don’t. I think it’s about control through fear and pressure. For example, if someone breaks the law the police can arrest them or use force. This is how the state keeps control using physical power.

2. An ideological state apparatus is a system that influences how we think and behave but not through force. These are institutions like schools, religion, the media, or even families. They usually teach us what’s normal or right so that we follow the system because we believe in it not because we’re afraid.

3. I believe that the main differences are how each one works. Repressive state Apparatuses use force or punishment to control people like police or courts. on the other hand, ideological state Apparatuses use ideas and beliefs to guide how people think and act like schools or religion.

4. An example I could use of ideology is from a scene from the movie The Lion King where mufasa tells Simba about the “Circle of life” how every animal has its place in the natural order. This scene teaches that everyone has a fixed role in society and that its natural and right to accept your place without questioning it. it makes inequality seem normal like some are just meant to rule and others to follow.

Sala Alzuber – Mass Incarceration as Racial Control.

  1. Michelle Alexander argues that mass incarceration isn’t really about crime. she argues that its actually a new way to control black and brown people, similar to how slavery and Jim Cow worked in the past. Even though lots of people believed the justice system is fair and only punishes people who break the law, Alexander shows that it unfairly targets communities of color, especially through things like the war on drugs. moreover, she explains how poor neighborhoods get policed more, even though drug use happens everywhere and how harsh laws mostly hurt people of color.

2. Alexader highlights that drug use and selling happens evenly across races and in some cases white people even use drugs more. but black and brown people are the ones getting arrested and locked up the most. This shows that the system isn’t just punishing crime it’s also targeting certain groups. So, the high number of people of color in prison isn’t because they commit crimes but because of how the system works against them.

3. “The American penal system has emerged as a system of social control unparalleled in world history” means that the U.S. prison system is being used to control people, not just punish them. Alexander says it’s not just about locking people up its about keeping people especially black and brown communities stuck in a cycle where they lose their rights, can’t vote, struggle to get jobs and housing, and are seen as second class citizens.

Sala Alzuber – The Politics Behind Law and Order.

  1. They used the words “law and order” to make it seem like they were just trying to keep peace and safety, instead of admitting they were against civil right. This way they could get support from people who didn’t want to be openly racist but still felt uncomfortable with the changes happening. It made their message more acceptable and helped them gain more voters.

2. Yes, I think it still has an effect. some politicians still talk about crime or immigration in a way that makes people afraid, even if they don’t directly talk about race. for example, when people talk about “inner city violence” or “protecting the border” it sometimes plays into racial fears without saying it directly. That’s similar to how the southern strategy worked before.
