Discussion Board 5.1

1. Means of Production and Labor

  • Means of Production: I understand the means of production as the physical things and resources you need to make something, like tools, machines, and buildings. For example, in a bakery, this would include the ovens, mixers, and the building itself.
  • Labor: Labor is the actual work and physical or mental effort that people put in to make things. For example, a baker doing the work to mix the ingredients and bake the bread is labor.

2. What is Value?

  • I think value is how much something is worth, and it comes from the human work needed to make it. A thing is valuable because people spent time and effort making it, and because other people need or want it. Ultimately, how much anything is valued depends on how much labor was required to make it.

3. The Relationship Between Labor and Value

  • Labor creates value. The more work time it takes to make something, the more value it has, because when workers make a product, their work goes directly into it.

4. Difference Between Labor and Labor Power

  • Labor: Labor is the actual process or act of working—putting your physical or mental capacity into action to produce something (like working an 8-hour shift).
  • Labor Power: Labor power is just the capacity or potential to work, which a person has inside them. Under capitalism, workers sell their labor power to an employer for a wage (like buying a commodity), while the capitalist gets to use that capacity to generate more value than what they paid for it.

5. Surplus Value

  • What it is: Surplus value is the extra value or profit created by the workers during their working day that goes beyond what they are paid in wages, which is then taken by the capitalist.
  • Why it matters: It is important in our study of social classes because it is the root of capitalist profit and explains how the capitalist class stays wealthy while workers remain exploited. For example, if a worker produces enough goods in a few hours to cover the cost of their daily wages, but continues working for several more hours, that extra output becomes surplus value for the boss.
