1. Wealth Inequality
The statistic that made the biggest impression on me was that the top 1 percent own between 40 and 50 percent of the nation’s total wealth, which is more than the combined wealth of the bottom 90 percent. I knew that wealth inequality existed in the United States, but I did not expect the difference to be this large. What surprised me most is that such a small percentage of the population can own more wealth than such a large majority. This statistic helped me understand what the reading means by the concentration of wealth.
2. Effects of Wealth Inequality
One implication of large wealth inequality is that people can have very different levels of economic security and opportunity. Reading 5.2 discusses workers facing stagnant wages, debt, fewer benefits, and unstable employment while wealth becomes concentrated among a much smaller group. I think we can see this in everyday life through differences in housing and financial security. For example, some people may work full-time but still struggle with rent, food, or other basic expenses. The reading even describes people who work but still cannot afford stable housing.

Hi Luna, I also mentioned something similar in my post about economic security and how wealth inequality can affect people in their everyday lives. I agree with what you said about how someone can work full-time and still struggle to afford rent, food, and other basic expenses. I would also add healthcare to that list because some people put off seeing a doctor or getting the care they need because they simply cannot afford it. I also think this level of economic insecurity can have larger effects on our communities and potentially contribute to things like crime or people becoming desperate when they are struggling to meet their basic needs. Having a full-time job is supposed to provide some level of financial security, but for many working class people that isn’t always the reality. I think that really shows how wealth inequality affects more than just how much money someone has it can affect their overall quality of life as well.
Hey Luna I agree with your point on the wealth inequality in America. The gap is huge and it doesn’t seem like it’s decreasing anytime soon which is concerning. The fact that a vast majority of people can control such a massive amount of assets and wealth shows major inequality. It shows that normal people like us struggle day to day just to make ends meet while they swim in the wealth.
