As Chris pointed out today, students likely can find the basics of what is needed for an audio assignment in their pockets. The voice memos app on a phone will do.
The library also has a podcast booth with two microphones, a sound mixer, and a computer with Audacity available on it.
Audacity is free, open-source software for recording and editing sound. It can be downloaded onto any desktop or laptop but is not unfortunately compatible with mobile devices. People with iOS devices can use GarageBand.

There are so many wonderful tools you can use for audio recording, ranging from big to small:
Discord: This is my video-conferencing tool of choice. I’ll be honest that it’s designed for gaming (both video games and tabletop games) but it’s a wonderful tool for everything. You can adjust audio settings for each person in your own feed and I believe it has an adjustable noise gate to cut off room noise. The user interface does take some getting used to as it’s MUCH different than others but it isn’t difficult.
Skype: Skype actually has a wonderful tool called NDI which will split the audio channels so you can edit them separately. It’s amazing but requires some other downloads and plugins which makes it more involved.
OBS: Technically called Open Broadcasting System is an amazing tool for everything you can imagine. It’s primarily intended for streaming to things like Twitch and Youtube but can be used to record video or audio with fun layouts and things like that. It’s a very easy to use system which requires some willingness to play and learn. It’s complicated for those with absolutely no previous knowledge but simple for somebody with basic knowledge.
Audio.com: This is a great place to host audio. It’s made by the same people who run Audacity. If you’ve ever wanted to create a podcast but were intimidated by the cost this is your solution. It’s completely free and simple to use. You just upload the audio file and it is added to the RSS feed. You will have to link it to places like Spotify & iTunes if you want it there…but that also means you don’t have to have it there.
Openshot: This is an open-source video editing in the model of Premiere. I haven’t used it but I have used a similar one I can’t find anymore (maybe it was rebranded into this?). I can’t speak to the quality but it exists! 🙂
