Platforms and Scenery

This is the general idea of what I want as the scenery in my game. The idea is a ghost who lives in the land of the dead, so I wanted spooky scenery to convey what kind of world they live in. Some elements that show this idea are the tombstones, the copius amount of “dead” trees with no leaves, and spooky elements like the moon being the only source of light and the spiderweb.

Obstacles and Rewards

Obstacles:

Zombie Hand: Zombie hands hold the player in place. The player must struggle to get out of their grip. These traps do not cause damage or death unless the player fails to struggle out on time.

Haunted Axe: These flying axes will randomly appear in certain areas and the player must jump to avoid them or they will take damage.

Hunter: The hunter is a reoccurring enemy throughout each level and cannot be permanently killed only knocked out. The hunter uses tranquilizer bullets which can’t harm the player but will cause disorientation making it harder to avoid obstacles. Being touched by the hunter results in a capture or instant kill and the only way to defeat him permanently is to lead him into a trap (like the zombie hand).

Rewards:

Green Gem: These rare gems grant the player a jump boost but can only be used a certain amount of times.

Red Gem: These gems grant the player immunity for a certain amount of hits.

Moon Coin: Grants the player an extra life and also freezes all enemies in place momentarily.

Obstacles and Rewards

In my game, the main character is presented as the Red Shoes. They need to avoid obstacles- poops. They either can jump over obstacles or destroy them with a weapon. To get a weapon player needs to collect coins and after collecting the coins the reward is the fly-flap which I picked from my three weapons because I think it fits well into the plot. And from the obstacles, I chose two designs to convey the action. After the poop is destroyed by the fly-flap it changes the shape.

Syobon Action Commentary

What are the goals, obstacles, and rewards of the game?

The goal of the game is to reach the end of each level. Obstacles are roaming enemies and unexpected ambushes. The reward is that you get to unlock the next level. As well as the satisfaction of concurring the level.

How does the game play with expectations of the platformer video game genre?

Most platformer games show you the obstacles right of the back. They only mean to test players’ skills. In Syobon Action the game throws unexpected traps at you and expects players to replay the level over and over and eventually master the level.

What genre would you apply to this game?

I will say Syobon Action is a hardcore platform game.

What comment is the game making on video games in general? Is it making a comment or is it just a joke?

Syobon Action definitely has elements of humor. However, I don’t think it is a satire on anything. It has its own character and unique difficulty curve. I think it is a comment on action video games that tells video game developers a lesson that difficult games can be great fun.

At the end of the first level, halfway walking up to the stairs, 4 enemies will drop from the sky and walk toward you. ruining your day.

Right after that, the game throws another fact approaching yellow missile at you if you don’t jump quick enough you will be sent back to the start of the level. It really doesn’t want you to finish the level.

This game really goes beyond players’ expectations by allowing your enemy to utilizing your item so you can continue the level. It is funny and really does add some puzzle-solving into the mix.
