“Ocular” User Testing

Most people found that my game wasn’t too hard to complete. Since I know I had some non-gamers play and respond to the form, I’m glad to know that my design wasn’t too difficult for them.

I feared that some of my audio clips wouldn’t be loud enough and when asked in my form the results showed that there weren’t really any issues with them. In the end I found my audio clips were fine the way they were.

Overall I found that the main thing I wanted to fix was to add a checkpoint feature to the game. Most of the feedback I received was positive but the players were also very upset every time they had to restart level one. I found this feature also came in handy with level two, since if the player died in level two they would reset back to one.

I also had some gems that were unobtainable, these have been removed.

I found some areas where the player would bump their heads when jumping, these have all been fixed.

For the future I’d like to work on fixing the player’s animation (walk and idle) and I would also like to work on my menu buttons and giving the player more options.

User Testing For Dark Legacy

I uploaded Dark Legacy to itch.io, posted a user testing survey, and got some results telling me that 66.7% of the players think the game is mostly unfair. Yet one person said the game was just a challenge.

Dark Legacy was rated as Difficult by 66.7% of the players and Rage Inducing by 33.3% of the players for the difficulty rating.

As for feedback for the game, here is what I got.
I can see I went overboard with the difficulty and plan to nerf the game to make it easier and less punishing.

Platforms and Scenery

The genre of my platformer game is fantasy, with the theme of being up in the air, over the clouds.

These are the platforms, being floating pieces of grass and dirt that the player can jump on
Decoration and potential hidden platforms within the game disguised as clouds
These are mountains that I made to further enhance the background, giving a more close up view.
The background of the game, showing that the player is high up off the ground.

Obstacles & Rewards

An evil eye. Haven’t decided if this little guy should be a mini boss or just another hostile.
An eye walker. For my designs, anything with an eye is made to come off as an enemy.
Simple collectable reward to use for upgrades and inspired by Legend of Zelda.
Gem collection animation.

Platforms & Scenery

Heavily inspired by Majoira’s Mask and Little Nightmares 2, I’ve created a dark and eerie scenery for my game.
The city idea is currently inspired by Little Nightmares 2. I want it to feel like these tall building are towering over the player.
These are some platform concepts, although I ended up not liking or using the circular red platforms in the end. Not sure about my choice in colors here and so I might redesign these a little later.

Character Design

“AL’s Walk Cycle” Originally I designed my character’s using Procreate but found out the hard way that procreate and Godot don’t mix too well.
“AL’s Jump Cycle”
“AL’s Idle”
This was my original design for my character; done in Procreate.

Platforms and Scenery

I had a few ideas that I wanted for the scenery of my game. The clouds was used to make the player feel like they were high in the sky.

The floating platforms are a reminder to the player just how high they are.

The sun and moon are used to make the player feel that the environment they’re in is weird since they can see more than one sun and moon at the same time.

Obstacles and Rewards

I had 3 different obstacles and 3 different rewards in mind for my game. I thought these different ideas would be very interesting to see in my game.

This broccoli was a reward for players who managed to get one.
This tomato was an obstacle for any players who got near it.
This carrot was going to be an obstacle as a spike of some sort.
This crown was going to be a reward for players if they managed to attain it at the end of the level.
I wanted to trick and bait players who weren’t very cautious by using the environment as an obstacle. Some things in the map may or may not be dangerous to step in.

Obstacles and Rewards

I imagine the game set in the middle of a desperate battle. Same as my character, the enemy will also have tanks and other war machines.

One of the game’s goal is to rescue friendly soldiers that are wounded. I took inspiration from the movie “Fury.” There is a scene where a squad of tanks uses the body of their tank to cover infantry to safe places.
