My Final Project

My Final Project; The Diamonds

Spring 2024

CSS/HTML, Audacity

I attempted to make a dramatic radio show like something that would have been broadcast in the 1940s. I enjoy working with audio and have a fascination with radio in particular. I tried to make the background colors and the fonts a little glim and drab due to the subject matter of the radio show. The most challenging issue I faced when making the project was getting the audio to play on my page. I was getting frustrated as I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working but I was able to consult our lessons about HTML and also find some advice online and I was able to get things working as they should!

My Website (Programming)

Title: Programming Project

Semester/Year: Spring 2024

Coding Language/ Software: JavaScript, HTML, CSS / CodeSandbox

My short choose your own adventure story lets the user chose their name, where they are, whatever kind of animal, article of clothing, an instrument, and mode of transportation they please to fill in the blanks of the story. Coding and programming was something I never thought I’d be doing, I assumed I was too old to learn it as I am really not that computer savvy and never have been. I felt that ship had sailed long ago. This project was challenging. Figuring out how to have all three languages essentially communicate with each other was rather difficult at first but with time and patience and watching Professor Roberts video multiple times, I was able to hit my stride and make this really simple basic story. I now have a relatively basic but working understanding of what each language is suited for when working on a project. When I started this class I had absolutely no idea how websites or apps or anything related to computers and the internet were designed or created but learning the basics it has sparked a real interest to continue to learn more about this. Although challenging, when things start to come together and no more error screens are popping up it really does start to be fun haha. Thank you Professor Roberts!

Choose Your Own Adventure

Spring 2024

HTML, CSS

I chose to have my adventure include my dog; usually while I’m doing work for school she is never afraid to let me know that something is wrong or that she wants attention so what better way to include her in this project! The most challenging part of the project was just learning the language Professor Roberts was talking about during his videos; it took a whole lot of rewatching the videos for me to understand why we were adding <div’s, attributes, #containers, and .choices but as soon as it clicked I found I was about to use short cuts, copy and paste certain codes and the aesthetic information instead of writing out code after code. It seemed complicate and convoluted to do things this way at first but I realized these techniques were meant to keep things organized and simple. This was such an informative project and it became fun after things started rolling and fitting together, I believe this is something I’d like to learn a lot more about in the future.

Website CSS Update

I added some styling to my website. I made the background green and the heading text yellow but making the paragraph text white. I also made the picture of Sheena the dog much smaller than it was earlier.

Animation Emotion and Text

Title: Home Run Excitement!

Semester: Spring 2024

Software: Adobe After Effects

I chose to use the emotion of excitement while creating an animation of a home run being hit. I tried to choose as many colors as I could for the stars at the end but wanted to make sure the main focus was the blue background and the orange baseball bat. I approached the pacing by working to make sure the placement key frames for both shape layers were moving at the same time; it was difficult to figure out how to be organized at first but once I was able to get a hang of keeping the work station organized it was smooth sailing after that. Having two separate shape layers for the ball and the bat made it much easier to sync up the keyframes for movement. I had a lot of fun working on this project and have a new found appreciation for animation.

Animation Blog Post Update

This is my storyboard for what I am going to create in After Effects. I’d like to convey the emotion of EXCITEMENT by showing a home run being hit and stars appearing after the ball disappears.

Audio Portrait of a Place

TITLE: What Goes On Out There?

BY: Mike Maier

SEMESTER/YEAR: Spring 2024

SOFTWARE: Audacity

For this project I used all original media and sounds. For the song that plays throughout the project I recorded myself playing drums, guitar, and bass in GarageBand and used the master recording as the music in Audacity. Some of the sounds I used were sounds I hear outside of my apartment everyday. The first sound is that of a ConEd tow truck towing a car that was in the way of a manhole cover that needed emergency work. The second sound is of the birds chirping outside my bathroom window with the faint sound of a helicopter in the distance. The third sound was my dog Sheena barking at me, and the last sound is the F train pulling into the Carroll Street station.

My main objective with the project was to automate the volume of the song in such a way to make it lower when each sound played so the sound was front and center while still being able to hear the music.

All songs and sounds were recorded by me.

Credit goes to me for the song, Sheena for the barks, ConEd for the tow truck sound, the birds and the helicopter, and the MTA for the sound of the F train.
