Editorial Design | Midterm Project

In this project you will design a magazine spread for an existing print magazine of your choice. You need a printed copy of the magazine or a PDF file of the magazine. You can also use one of the magazines that I collected here.

Part 1: Research

Inspect the design of a magazine of your choice. Answer all the questions in this questionnaire.

Part 2: Gather content

Come up with an idea for a feature article on a topic that falls within the scope of the magazine. Do not repeat an existing article in the magazine.

In addition to copy text the article must include a title, subtitles, images and image captions. If used in your magazine, used editorial page elements such as pull-quotes, a deck, a lead paragraph and/or subtitles. The copy text for the article could be dummy text but you must write all titles and subtitles.

Images can come from free stock photography sites, such as https://www.pexels.com/ and https://pixabay.com/. You can also take your own photographs or create illustrations. If your article features an actual product or a person, you can use online photos of them, as long as the photos are raw and not graphically treated with text or other embellishments. Other copyrighted images are not allowed.

Part 3: Design

Design a spread (2 facing pages). You can add additional pages as well. Your design must fit seamlessly in the magazine. Employ the visual language that the magazine uses and that you identified in part 1 of this assignment.

Part 4: Document

Document your typographic design in the Type Specification Form.
